MORE than two-thirds of Australian voters do not embrace population growth, according to a national survey of social attitudes.

When asked ''Do you think Australian needs more people?'' an overwhelming 69 per cent answered negatively - and voters in Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's home state of Queensland were most opposed.

Although the remaining 31 per cent nationally wanted more people, only 23 per cent of the overall sample favoured growth by recruiting extra migrants.

More than 3000 voters participated in the survey, conducted between December last year and February this year as a segment of the Australian Survey of Social Attitudes.

While 73 per cent of Queenslanders surveyed were likely to say ''no'' to growth, residents of the national capital had the most sanguine views. The survey found that 50 per cent of ACT residents were pro-growth.

In Victoria, 70 per cent did not favour growth. In NSW, 69 per cent opposed it.

''This shows there's widespread opposition to the idea of a 'big Australia', but it doesn't yet have a political focus,'' said Dr Katharine Betts, a Swinburne University sociologist who analysed the data.

Strikingly, the survey also detected gender differences in attitudes to population growth - with more men than women favouring increases.

While the Rudd government recently signalled constraints to migration and refugee policy, Australia's population in 2008-09 grew by 2.1 per cent, or a record 443,100 people. Nearly two-thirds of this growth was from net overseas migration, according to Dr Betts's analysis.........
