Well, I suspect that I know more Yanks than you do, and I've never heard any of them refer to Venezuela as a communist state.brian ross wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 12:04 amVenezuela? Isn't that a Communist state, 4E? I mean, that is what all the yanks I've discussed it with have called it.
Here's a little political science quiz for you. I'll even simplify it for you by making it multiple choice!
What political party did Hugo Chavez belong to?
1. The United Capitalist Party of Venezuela.
2. The United Communist Party of Venezuela.
3. The United Socialist Party of Venezuela.
Take all the time you need.

Ah, labels are so important hey? So, was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics just a Socialist state, 4E? How about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea? Now that must be a bastion of democracy, right?The4thEstate wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 12:32 amWell, I suspect that I know more Yanks than you do, and I've never heard any of them refer to Venezuela as a communist state.brian ross wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 12:04 amVenezuela? Chavez may have been a socialist but his successors are not.

Since we both agree that Chavez was a socialist, let's examine the legacy of socialism in Venezuela.
Here's a snapshot of how life in Venezuela "improved" under Chavez through 2008, according to Human Rights Watch. Sounds like a real workers' paradise to me!
https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2009/c ... -venezuela
1. Independence of the Judiciary
In 2004 the president and his supporters in the National Assembly launched a political takeover of the Supreme Court, filling the court with government supporters and creating new measures that make it possible to purge justices from the Court.
2. Labor Rights
The Chávez government has engaged in systematic violations of workers' rights aimed at undercutting established labor unions while favoring new, parallel unions that support its political agenda.
3. Police Abuses
Violent crime is rampant in Venezuela and extrajudicial killings by security agents remain a recurring problem. Thousands of extrajudicial executions have been recorded in the past decade.
4. Prison Conditions
Venezuelan prisons are among the most violent in Latin America. Weak security, insufficient guards, and corruption allow armed gangs to effectively control prisons. Overcrowding, deteriorating infrastructure, and the poor training of guards contribute to the brutal conditions.
5. Freedom of Expression and the Media
In its efforts to influence the control and content of the media, the government has engaged in discriminatory actions against media that air opposition viewpoints, strengthened the state's capacity to limit free speech, and created powerful incentives for government critics to engage in self-censorship.
Ah, socialism ... what's not to like?

https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/ky ... now-racistOn Tuesday, the hosts of CBS This Morning warned viewers that common words and phrases with no racial context whatsoever were now somehow examples of “racism” in everyday life. It was all part of a segment designed to promote a “new book teaching kids the roots of racism.”
“Many headlines referred to the stock market plunge yesterday as ‘Black Monday,’ and that is just one of the subtle and not-so-subtle ways that racism has been braided into our everyday culture,” co-host Tony Dokoupil lectured at the top of the 8:30 a.m. ET half hour segment. He then touted a new children’s version of the book, Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, by CBS News contributor Ibram X. Kendi and co-author Jason Reynolds.

A graphic appeared on screen warning of which words and phrases to avoid: “Words With Negative Connotations: Black Monday, Black Sheep, Blackballing, Blackmail, Blacklisting.”
