I agree that reducing the blood alcohol limit to zero is not a feasible solution. Courts and jails will be filled with people who have had one drink on a Friday night after work. The system will get jammed.

With so much access to technology these days, I wonder if we will ever see mechanisms placed into motor
vehicles which require a driver to take a breath test before attempting to start the vehicle....
If he fails the test, the car doesn't start.
Of course, this would have huge ramifications within society and the economy...
Revenue from traffic fines would drop...accidents/motor vehicle damage/repairs would drop, seriously
effecting the motor trades...purchases of replacement cars would drop..less need for car salesmen...
Car insurance would come down....
Lives would be saved...less need for Police and Ambulances...
Less GST would be collected on all the above...
Less alcohol related illnesses/deaths...
Less alcohol would be consumed..more money in the pockets of the peasants....
The list is endless.....
Society would change...….
Maybe too radical....too utopian...
All too hard for our incompetent grubberments…….

Alcohol ignition interlocks

An alcohol ignition interlock is a breath test device linked to the ignition system of a vehicle. The interlock is designed to prevent a vehicle from starting if the driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) exceeds zero. The ignition interlock is designed to deter and prevent convicted drink drivers from operating their vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

Drivers must provide a breath sample that the interlock analyses for the presence of alcohol before the vehicle will start. As alcohol takes time to be absorbed into a person’s bloodstream, an interlock device may not stop a driver from starting the vehicle. Therefore, the interlock also requires additional breath tests at random intervals during the journey.
