Thanks for that.
In most of the places the Govt. is raking in almost all the money after taxes.
It's unscrupulous that a Govt. can do that and not force poky venues to hire security staff.
It's what happens without regulation - greed takes over.
Why not close them down?
What possible good can a poky venue do for society?

Almost right. A Pokie is a poker machine. Also called "a one armed bandit" in Australia.

We have strange rules about casinos. Most casinos are on Indian land and some states require that they be on bodies of water. All of the casinos in Shreveport LA are on river boats. The boat never leaves the dock, but they are required by law to keep the boat staffed and in working order. I've worked in several of them on their emergency power equipment. Oklahoma has large and small casinos everywhere on Indian land. As abused as Indians were, they have their own "nations" within their land and they are making a ton of money off of "Americans" gambling in their casinos. Gambling is kind of shunned, but the revenue they pull in is starting to lure politicians. Texans go to Oklahoma or Louisiana to gamble.
We call slot machines "one armed bandits". A "poker machine" may be a variation of the slot machine.

If the Americans are calling "slot machines" "one armed bandits", then I suspect that Australia's descriptive language has contributed another saying to the English Language. The world already has "kangaroo court" and "bullshit". Perhaps Texan could spread to the USA our saying for "penis"? That of "a one eyed trouser snake."

My dad used to call it, "one-eyed custard chuckers"...
