Actually, the Electoral College preceded the popular vote in the US system, Black Orchid. It was created so that each state would elect it's members who in turn would vote to elect el Presidente. It was however, supplanted as the primary means of election in the 1880s by the Popular Voting system, where all citizens were meant to vote for the candidate of their choice. The Electoral College was chosen because of the prevalence of Slavery in America's south. Once the Civil War had happened and slavery ended, it was felt acceptable to extend the franchise to former slaves, although that was stopped by State Government's denying the right to vote to Black Citizens until the 1960s.

You're right, I don't agree with the Electoral College system. It denies the outcome of the popular vote which represents the wishes of the majority of voters. El Presidente' Trump exploited that and obviously doesn't care what the majority of voters wish had happened. Tsk, tsk. That you refuse to acknowledge what the majority of American voters sought in 2016 is IMHO despicable.

Next to Trump, my favourite US politician is former DA Trey Gowdy, who said that he hoped that the Dems would use the constitutional lawyers to testify ion front of the Senate, as all they would do was "put everybody to sleep."

Another U.S. politician you should check out is Louisiana senator John Kennedy (no, not THAT John Kennedy). His homespun Southern wit is frequently evident in his observations about politics, such as these comments about gun control:

1. "If you trust government, you obviously failed history class. The Native Americans gave up their guns, too."

2. "A lot of my colleagues in Washington D.C. say that England is such a wonderful place because they don't have guns. And if they think it's such a swell place, well, carry your happy ass" there.

And this quote about defense contractors fleecing the taxpayers: "We've got … some hogs who have all four feet and their snout in the trough."

He also said this about a Washington Post columnist who wrote a story advocating socialism: "It sounds like she was playing Frisbee in the quad during history class." (In case "quad" is not a familiar expression to Aussies, it refers to a four-sided lawn on a college campus.)

Lefties want to abolish the Electoral College because that way, their candidates could cater to the needs of New York City, Los Angeles and other coastal population hubs and ignore pretty much everybody in the middle of the country, not to mention small towns and less populated areas. So entire states, such as Wyoming, North Dakota and Nebraska, would essentially have no voice.

In the 2016 election, Trump won more than 2,600 counties across America, while Hillary won fewer than 500.

So there's nothing wrong with the Electoral College. It's been around since the '80s.
