A “catastrophic” fire danger rating has been issued for Greater Sydney on Tuesday for the first time in history. Here’s what that means.

The NSW Rural Fire Service has issued a “catastrophic” fire danger rating for the Greater Sydney and Greater Hunter areas on Tuesday, November 12.

It’s the first time the city has faced the warning since the risk levels were introduced in 2009.

WHO IS IMPACTED?

Greater Sydney council areas: The Hills; Blacktown; Blue Mountains; Burwood; Camden; Campbelltown; Canada Bay; Fairfield; Hawkesbury; Hornsby; Hunters Hill; Kogarah; Ku-ring-gai; Lane Cove; Liverpool; Mosman; North Sydney; Parramatta; Penrith; Randwick; Ryde; Strathfield; Sutherland; Sydney; Waverley; Willoughby; Woollahra; Bayside; Canterbury-Bankstown; Central Coast; Cumberland; Georges River; Inner West and Northern Beaches.

“We need to ensure that people understand there is a risk in all bushland areas, stretching from Bega all the way to Byron, from the Victorian border to the Queensland border,” Insp Shepherd said in a media alert on Monday.

“If you have any apprehension about your safety leave (Monday) and not (Tuesday),’’ Emergency Services Minister David Elliott said.

The lethal combination of high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity have experts declaring Tuesday’s conditions will be among the most dangerous on record.

“We’re talking about schools being destroyed, we’re talking about community halls, bridges, power poles,” RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said.

“All of those sorts of things, they get consumed in the path of a volatile fast-moving fire.

“We are particularly concerned about weather forecast right across NSW for Tuesday. The indications are the conditions will be worse than what we experienced in northern NSW (at the weekend).

“Not only will they be worse, they will be concentrated a lot further in NSW.”

Nope, nothing to do with Climate Change at all, folks. Nothing to see here, move along, please, move along. :roll :roll

Arson during drought conditions would be an efficient terrorist attack with very little chance of being caught. I think it will be the next terrorist tactic. They can do billions in damage and cause considerable loss of life. Don't rule it out. All you need is petrol, a lighter, a map, and know the wind direction.

Nothing to see here? Why thank you "Greta" for displaying your usual lack of empathy and understanding for the many human, animal and wildlife victims who have perished horribly and just to push your own barrow.

Surprised you aren't topping it off by blaming Trump.

Most fires usually come down to arson, many are idiot kids, who should be dealt with as an act of terrorism using the absolute full force of the law.

The Greens and their lobbyists can also be held responsible for blocking the burning of undergrowth during the cool seasons. They prevent people from cutting down trees on their property lines to make fire breaks and actively block attempts at clearing dangerous undergrowth and dry fuel on the forest floor through back burning (hazard reduction).

This was 10 years ago and they are still at it ...
It wasn't climate change which killed as many as 300 people in Victoria last weekend. It wasn't arsonists. It was the unstoppable intensity of a bushfire, turbo-charged by huge quantities of ground fuel which had been allowed to accumulate over years of drought. It was the power of green ideology over government to oppose attempts to reduce fuel hazards before a megafire erupts, and which prevents landholders from clearing vegetation to protect themselves.

So many people need not have died so horribly. The warnings have been there for a decade. If politicians are intent on whipping up a lynch mob to divert attention from their own culpability, it is not arsonists who should be hanging from lamp-posts but greenies.

Governments appeasing the green beast have ignored numerous state and federal bushfire inquiries over the past decade, almost all of which have recommended increasing the practice of "prescribed burning". Also known as "hazard reduction", it is a methodical regime of burning off flammable ground cover in cooler months, in a controlled fashion, so it does not fuel the inevitable summer bushfires.

Update on the Koalas at Lake Cathie ...
As many as 350 koalas are estimated to have died in fires that tore through the Port Macquarie region.

Firefighters are still battling up to 64 bushfires across NSW including the north coast where three people have died and at least 150 homes were destroyed over the past three days.

The blaze devastated the Lake Innes Nature Reserve, which was home to a colony of up to 600 koalas.

“We think most of the animals were incinerated — it’s like a cremation,” Koala Conservation Australia president Sue Ashton told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“They have been burnt to ashes in the trees.”

Rescuers reportedly managed to find 16 injured koalas, which were taken to Port Macquarie’s Koala Hospital for treatment over the weekend.

Photos show koalas with burnt feet and hands, as well as burns and singeing to the body.

It’s hoped that more koalas will be found in the coming days and the organisation is encouraging people to take injure wildlife to the hospital.

A fundraising page for the koalas impacted by the fires, notes that the group of koalas found in the region are one of the most genetically diverse groups in Australia.

It suggested that people could help surviving koalas and other wildlife by providing access to water to reduce further deaths from dehydration.

Further hot winds and temperatures in the 30s are forecast for Monday in the major fire zones in the Clarence Valley and mid-north coast including Port Macquarie and Glen Innes.

The worst could still be to come, with a “catastrophic” fire danger declared for the Sydney and Hunter regions on Tuesday.

Forty schools have been closed on Monday after a total state fire ban was declared for Monday and Tuesday.

I am sure his "thoughts and prayers" are with the victims, just as ScoMo's are, Black Orchid

What do the victims of these bushfires think about ScoMo's "thoughts and prayers" or would they prefer some concrete action to reduce the effects of Global Warming and Climate Change on their and of course, our, environment? You get a lot of bushfires 'round your way, do you, Black Orchid? :roll
