It amazes me that people will go $100000 in debt with student loans for a degree in gender studies or social work where they can only expect to make $30-40k/year.

I can't believe anyone would even want to do gender studies period.

Tex, do you think that education should be free or should students have to pay for it?
Gender studies does have a place but not necessarily as the major of a degree IMO. Understanding how gender affects how we view the world is important and shouldn't be ignored. While some may feel it is a waste of time, others don't. It is the same with "Race" studies. All these things have altered the way in which we address issues. Without Feminism, gender studies wouldn't have risen. Without Racism, "Race" studies would have arisen.

Most things are only worth what you pay for it. If everyone is given a free education, it won’t be a quality education and it won’t give you an opportunity to pursue your interests.

Things are different in the USA -
I'm sure there are far more jobs for people in maths and science.

I suspect so. There is probably more research and programming going on.
My niece was a math major, but she is teaching high school math with her degree. She did her student teaching at the school where my brother teaches. He graduated at 21 with a double major of business and education. He teaches economics and business software.

Re: science and maths doesn't pay
What an interesting claim. Between 1972 and 1988, tertiary education was free in Australia. I went to university in 1983, free. I received a quality education in the disciplines that interested me. I went on and completed a post-graduate degree, free as well, also in the disciplines that interested me. In 1988, HECS - Higher Education Contribution Scheme - was introduced (effectively a student loan scheme). I'd like to get a PhD but there is no way I am prepared to pay for it until after I have retired. I have, since 1987 worked in IT. It wasn't the discipline I studied in but the disciplines I studied in helped me to work in it. It was always an interest but not a major one.
