So, what do you think? I’m fiercely opposed to horse and greyhound racing (and even more fiercely opposed to all the bloody gambling advertising currently on TV). This isn’t just because of the latest horror stories, I’ve had relatives involved in both. One was charged with using live bait to train his greyhounds, and the other made his horse run here in Hobart on a stinking hot day, and it had a lung bleed.

Humans’ attitudes towards animals utterly disgust me. The American trophy hunters you see on Facebook, the caged animals, the dogs used for dogfighting, the animals facing extinction, like the koala, because of lost habitat. There are too many people on earth for it to be sustainable.

Honestly, I don't think about these types of things to make decent opinion. I consider Horse\dog racing a mugs game and frankly if people are treating the animals decently I don't have a problem. BUT I do know when money gets involved everything changes.

As for Trophy hunters, cage animal, dog fights and puppy factory type issues and so on, I am dead against. There is no reason to have such "so called" sport and I don't see how anybody could consider they are anything but savages when it comes to supporting and participating in such...

I have no problem with racing IF the animals are treated with care and respect and hopefully this latest horror will bring in really tight regulations. Maybe all race horses should be tagged and tracked from purchase to the grave.

I bought an ex race horse once. After he pulled a muscle in his back and couldn't race anymore he was sold off as a polo pony and horribly abused. He then ended up on a banana plantation where he was being sold for dog food and which is where I found him. I paid the guy (I cant remember if it was $40 or $80) the same money he was going to get for selling him for dog food, hired someone to pick him up and brought him home. Beautiful horse.

I wouldn't single out the Americans for trophy hunting. There are plenty here in Australia and one of the world's worst is white from Zimbabwe who boasts about killing over 5,000 Elephants. The Brits are up there as some of the top trophy hunters in the world too. If I had a gun I would shoot these people myself.

Bottom line ... I dislike people who don't like and respect animals. There's something really wrong with them in all ways.

Koalas are not close to extinction. In the Adelaide Hills they are actually a bit of a pest. They are breeding out of control on Kangaroo Island. It all depends on where you are, whether they are facing extinction. In the Eastern States? Yes, they are in danger. The problem is habitat eradication. However, as the South Australia experience has shown, it can be fixed with a little bit of discipline and a willingness to live with Them.

Thumbs up to your friend. Brightside does truly seem like a wonderful place. I have had many rescues and abandoned animals over the years and strays always used to just find me as if I shone like a beacon. I really admire what your friend, and others like her, are doing.
