The ACT Legislative Assembly is expected to pass a bill legalising possessing and growing cannabis for personal use in the nation’s capital.
The private member’s bill on Wednesday from Labor backbencher Michael Pettersson would allow Canberrans over 18 to possess 50 grams of cannabis and grow two plants.
Labor needs the support of the Greens to pass the bill, and they have offered their conditional support.
While legalising the drug might clash with federal drug laws, Mr Pettersson on Tuesday told AAP he was “very confident” there wouldn’t be any problems.
But in a report on the bill, the ACT government said it could not rule out people being prosecuted under Commonwealth laws.

Yet from the police ...
People sharing cannabis with a friend at a party would be still be charged with drug supply, despite new cannabis possession laws set to be legislated on Wednesday.
The ACT's chief police officer Ray Johnson said sharing the drug between people, even when no money is involved, would still constitute as an offence.
"If there's evidence that someone is providing cannabis to someone else, that's supply and that's an offence," he told ABC radio on Wednesday.
Under the new laws, put forward by Labor backbencher Michael Pettersson, adults would be allowed to possess 50 grams of cannabis and grow two plants in their home.
The bill is expected to pass the ACT Assembly on Wednesday, after debate on several amendments.
Chief Police Officer Johnson said ACT police officers would support the government on the new laws.
"We'll work to make [the laws] as effective as it can be," he said.
"Police officers will have their views, and they'll execute the law of the day as best as they can."

Sharing a joint with someone, with no money changing hands, could hardly be construed as 'supply'. More wasted tax dollars and Court time if the cops want to go down this road.

Cods, if you get some plants in the ground this week you'll be harvesting some nice fat buds in time for the Ozpol Xmas party.

The ACT have been trying to "legalise" pot for years. The ACT Government have tried legalising all sorts of stuff, most were turned over by the Federal Government.
When I came to Canberra in 1981, I met a woman at the local Primary School and we became friendly, mostly because we lived in the same cul-de-sac and our kids played together. She was a High School Teacher and I remember her asking me whether I had "crept down" to her place and pulled out the "pot plants" she had growing in her back garden. Nope, not me ... I wouldn't even know what a pot plant looked like and had never touched the stuff.
Some time later, she had a gathering at her place for dinner, she invited me along as another female for her boyfriend's pal. Dinner went fine and then, out came the "maryj", so I had a puff, just because, and it didn't do a thing for me but the other 3 were rolling around on the floor in "raptures" and I was so worried I rang a mutual male friend who was with the AFP.
Hilarious.

Great to see the ACT legalizing marijuana.....I suppose plenty of children conceived/carried by mothers whilst
smoking pot will be born as fruitloops…..I suppose the next step is for them to allow pill testing at music/drug
festivals in the ACT....ooops...sorry..theyve done that already...no wonder our kids are growing up morons......

Don't you think Court time should be spent on things more important than smoking a joint?
