Abortions could be decriminalised and the termination of pregnancies regulated as amedical procedure in NSW under legislation set to be introduced to state parliament.

The Reproductive Healthcare Reform Bill 2019, a private members bill, will be introduced to parliament this week by independent MP for Sydney Alex Greenwich.

The bill outlines that a woman does not commit an offence if she procures a termination withinthe framework provided in the legislation, amending sections 82 and 83 in the Crimes Act 1900.

“The bill ensures women in NSW have access to safe and lawful terminations without the threat of criminal convictions and provides doctors with the legal clarity they have long sought,” Mr Greenwich said in a statement on Sunday.

Based on lawsalready in place in Queensland and Victoria, the bill also has the support of Australian Medical Association.

It was developed by a cross-party working group with the oversight of Health Minister Brad Hazzard, who on Sunday welcomedthe bill.

“Women in NSW shouldhave the same reproductive rights as women in other states,” Mr Hazzard said in a statement.

“This bill would ensure women and their doctors are appropriately protected in NSW and this medical procedure is properly regulated.”

I know quite a few women who have had abortions in NSW in the last 30 years.

They should have decriminalised it decades ago.

What is the point in having laws that aren't enforced perhaps our bloated politicians should repeal one unenforced law for every new law they write.

The New South Wales Upper House has rejected an amendment to a bill decriminalising abortion that sought to ban abortions on the grounds of sex selection.

After a heated debate yesterday, the Upper House voted 15 in favour of the amendment and 26 against.

The amendment, moved by Finance Minister Damien Tudehope, sought to ban an abortion where medical practitioners know, or ought reasonably to know, it’s being performed for sex selection.

It had attached a maximum six-month prison sentence for the offence.

The Upper House earlier passed an amendment to the bill that states doctors must provide appropriate care to babies born alive after an abortion.

Nationals MP Niall Blair, who introduced the amendment yesterday, said he wished he wasn’t moving it at all and it was disappointing that MPs had to codify what already existed.

And we criticised China for its years of sex selection after seeing the cruelty and damage it caused there with its abuse and neglect of female fetuses/babies?

Other rejected changes include one seeking to have the bill refer to a pregnant “woman” rather than “person” and another that would delay the bill going into effect until it was proclaimed.

Wasting tax dollars on political correctness. Of course it isn't a woman who is pregnant it has to be a "person". Double
