Gladys Liu

Post by Black Orchid » Wed Sep 11, 2019 6:11 pm

Liberal backbencher Gladys Liu has confirmed she held membership of an organisation linked to China's foreign interference operations, less than 24 hours after saying she could not recall being a part of it.

Ms Liu in a statement said she held an honorary role with Guangdong Overseas Exchange Association in 2011 but no longer had any association with the organisation.

On Tuesday, the ABC revealed Chinese Government records indicating the Liberal backbencher was a member of two provincial chapters of the China Overseas Exchange Association between 2003 and 2015.

Ms Liu made no mention of the Shandong provincial chapter in her statement.

She later told Sky News she "cannot recall" being a member of either group.

"I have resigned from many organisations and I am in the process of auditing any organisations who may have added me as a member without my knowledge or consent," Ms Liu said in a statement on Wednesday.

"I am a proud Australian, passionately committed to serving the people of Chisholm, and any suggestion contrary to this is deeply offensive."

The China Overseas Exchange Association, at the time of Ms Liu's membership, reported directly to Beijing's powerful State Council and has since been merged with the Communist Party's United Front Work Department, aimed at influencing foreign governments.

She did, however, confirm she had been the honorary president of the United Chinese Commerce Association of Australia and the Australian Jiangmen General Commercial Association.

She has since ended her association with both.

"Unfortunately some Chinese associations appoint people to honorary positions without their knowledge or permission," Ms Liu said.

"I do not wish my name to be used in any of these associations and I ask them to stop using my name."

Labor has demanded Prime Minister Scott Morrison assure the Parliament Ms Liu is "fit and proper" to be a MP.

Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne told the Senate that any suggestion Ms Liu wasn't "fit and proper" to serve as an MP was "offensive".

Labor has also compared the situation to that of former Labor senator Sam Dastyari, who quit Parliament after revelations about his links to China.

Mr Morrison rejected that and dismissed suggestions Ms Liu should face the same fate as Mr Dastyari.

Ms Liu, in her interview with Sky News, faced questions about China's military expansion in disputed waters in the South China Sea.

Three times she declined to characterise China's actions as "illegal" but said she supported the Australian Government's position.

"We do not take sides on competing territorial claims but we call on all claimants to resolve disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law," Ms Liu said in her Wednesday statement.

"China is not a democracy and is run under an authoritarian system.

"We have always been and will continue to be clear-eyed about our political differences, but do so based on mutual respect, as two sovereign nations."

Mr Morrison told Question Time he was satisfied with the statement Ms Liu had issued about the South China Sea on Wednesday.

First she denies the association, then she can't remember and finally she admits it. It doesn't matter which side of politics you are on these people should all be treated the same. It's a pity lefties only attack one side and ignore the foibles of those on the left whilst those on the right are generally more unbiased in their condemnation.

IMO show her the door.

Pauline is all over this like a rash. I saw the interview on Sky. Gladys came across as dishonest and shifty.

Gladys Liu's association with Chinese figures who were deemed a security risk was the subject of an ASIO investigation even before she entered Parliament or became a Liberal Party candidate.

The ABC understands ASIO Director-General Duncan Lewis advised that then-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, based on the guest list, should not to attend a "meet and greet" organised by Ms Liu in the Victorian electorate of Chisholm for Chinese New Year in February 2018.

At the time, Julia Banks was the Liberal MP for the eastern Melbourne seat and Ms Liu was active in Chisholm Liberal Party circles.

Ms Liu had already earned a reputation as an supreme fundraiser.

In the wake of the Sam Dastyari affair the year before, Mr Turnbull's office had developed a standard procedure to request the guest list for fundraisers or major organised events where the PM was invited.

About three or four weeks before the February 18 "meet and greet" in Box Hill, Mr Turnbull's office asked for a guestlist from Ms Banks's office.

It duly arrived on an A4 sheet of paper with about 30 names from the Chinese community.

This list was then forwarded to ASIO for vetting.

The advice from the Director-General was that Mr Turnbull should not attend the meeting.

The ABC understands Mr Turnbull was not directly told of Mr Lewis's advice. Instead, Mr Turnbull attended Chinese New Year celebrations in inner Melbourne alongside Ms Banks, one of his loyalists.

After the leadership coup that saw Mr Turnbull ousted in August 2018, Ms Banks said she would not recontest the federal election for the Liberal Party in Chisholm.

Three months later, Ms Banks quit the Liberal Party altogether, putting the Morrison Government further into minority status.

Ms Liu won Liberal preselection in late October.

Both sides are in bed with the Chinese and it shows in the hundreds of unit blocks being built in Sydney especially for the Chinese. Morrison needs to give Liu the boot. She only won Chisolm by a hair from another Chinese Labor party candidate who is probably just as shonky.

It was listening to RN this evening. They had Sam Dastyari on, discussing the differences between his case and Gladys Liu and the similarities. Unlike Ms.Liu he takes full responsibility for what occurred to him. He admits he got in too deep - rather like a frog in boiling water - and the Chinese took advantage of him. He resigned when he realised what had happened. His point was - the same standard should be applied to both sides of politics. ScoMo is still trying to point Ms. Liu was different, that she has done nothing wrong. Well, the pooh has hit the fan. Time for the Tories to admit that one of their number has been naughty. When is she going to resign?

^^^ see what I mean? The Chinese "took advantage" of Sam so it wasn't his fault but those on the right are guilty by default.

He has accepted full responsibility, Black Orchid. When is Ms.Liu going to do the same, hey? When is ScoMo going to sack her? Or are the Tories incapable of doing anything wrong in your book?

I've already said she is dishonest and should be kicked out. Honestly, Brian, I can't quite figure out if you are illiterate or retarded.

yes pack your bags Gladys... sorry but its unacceptable ..
same with SIDOTI in NSW libs.. he is going down even further as more comes out..

https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/ ... 0e2bef5020

John Sidoti was parliamentary secretary for transport when the department was designing specifications for a new access road to his private land holding in Rouse Hill.

Confirmation of the road’s design parameters handed the MP, now a senior Liberal minister, and his Chinese developer business partners the final measure needed for approval of a $70 million high-rise precinct next to Tallawong station on the government’s flagship $8 billion North West Metro line.

Approval for the four eight-storey residential towers on Mr Sidoti’s part-owned land at 38 Cudgegong Rd was in limbo from September 2015 until December 2017 when the road specifications were confirmed by Northwest Rapid Transit, on behalf of Transport for NSW, the development application reveals.
