It was a garage sale for history buffs and political junkies — with a chance to own an item that once belonged to arguably our most-­beloved former prime minister.

Hundreds of bidders and curious attendees piled into Paddington RSL last night in the hope of snaring at least one of Bob Hawke’s former possessions, from golf clubs to cigar boxes.

The “Bob Hawke and Blanche d’Alpuget mementos curiosities and design” auction had a wide variety of Mr Hawke’s belongings up for grabs — all for top dollar.

One of the most popular items at the auction was a Hugh Sawrey painting titled The Drovers Wife. The artwork hung in Mr Hawke’s office and was sold to an anonymous bidder for $23,000.

Another highly anticipated lot was a silver bowl given to the late prime minister by US vice-president Dick Cheney at the end of the Gulf War. The bowl was estimated to sell for between $500 and $700 but the winning bid was $6500.

One of the most surprising items was a pair of Victorian silver meat dishes, estimated to be sold between $1000 and $1500. Bidding on the plates, with frogs dangling off the side, quickly went north of $10,000 with the winner ­ claiming the item for $22,000.

“That is about $5500 per frog,” auctioneer Andrew Shapiro joked.

An esky with the late PM’s face and six-pack of Hawke’s Lager sold for $5000 to a private bidder.

What an odd event it was. Australia’s favourite PM has been dead only 104 days and yet here we were uncomfortably straddling the previously untested Venn diagram of memorial and garage sale.

“Bob was my favourite item but he’s gone so everything else can go,” d’Alpuget told the Sunday Telegraph matter-of-factly as the newly sold four-storey Northbridge mansion she shared with Hawke was thrown open for inspection at the weekend.

A very callous and greedy woman if you ask me. She also payed tribute to only one of Hawke's children during the memorial service. I hope the daughter contesting his Will and suing old Blanche wins her case.

Perhaps there was something in his Will about dividing the proceeds up?

When my Mother died there was an Auction to sell off her antiques and other valuable treasures so that the proceeds could be divided up between myself and my sisters.

So I very much doubt the proceeds will be shared with his children or they wouldn't be contesting the Will to begin with.

Perhaps they might even have liked to keep some of the things sold for sentimental and not monetary reasons?

I wasn't aware of any of that. Haven't been reading what Blanche and Hawke's kids have been doing. So perhaps she was just being a bitch and wanting more money for herself?

Oh, regarding the Auction of my Mother's stuff, one sister wanted some of the antique items and had to go to the Auction and bid so her money went into the "pot" and she got what she wanted, including a Royal Doulton dinner set that she paid $6,000 for! I really wasn't interested in Mum's antiques but we were all "allowed" to take a few things after the Funeral as mementos, I chose a nice mantel clock that my Grandmother gave Mum and Dad for their 15th Wedding Anniversary, that has Westminster chimes on the quarter hour and as very loud DONG DONG DONG on the hour, that I recall hearing when I was a kid ... plus my share of the money, naturally.

not all families are like that though...

I have a few antique dolls but only one of mine is interested in them so thats good..

I got stuff all from m y parents of course I was here and they died in England...but I thought I would have got a reminder of them.
never mind thats life..
