This is the thread for everything Boris and Brexit.

For the next couple of weeks, the sun may not shine but the Scottish capital Edinburgh will enjoy the spotlight anyway.

The streets are packed with tens of thousands of visitors there to enjoy a smorgasbord of entertainment: music, comedy, drama, literally hundreds of shows squeezed into every possible venue for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

But beyond the curtain calls, the encores, is another drama building to a tense final act.

It's called Brexit, and its consequences for the existence of the United Kingdom, and Scotland in particular, are far reaching.

Hundreds of kilometres south in that land called London, the new British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has promised everyone the nation will be out of the European Union by the October 31 deadline, deal or no deal.

That's despite dire warnings from the Bank of England, the Chamber of Commerce and the former chancellor of the Exchequer that a no-deal Brexit will seriously disable the economy. Everything from a slowdown to a full-blown recession is predicted.

But Mr Johnson is ploughing on, fulfilling his promise to honour the 2016 Brexit referendum in which Britons narrowly voted to leave 52 to 48 per cent.

With a hostile Parliament and enemies within his own Conservative Party, it looks like an election is inevitable and could be called as early as in the next few weeks.

But — warns Mr Johnson — it will not happen before his Brexit job is done.

Well call me old fashioned, but when the Brexit fiasco began...say 18 months ago....maybe longer....
I was suggesting to all and sundry that when the shit really hits the fan...(ie...now)…
that they would finish up going to another referendum, and...guess what...they will vote to stay.....
Its all too fkn hard to leave....made even harder by the oligarchs.....

Has he actually done that?

No. He needs a two thirds majority in the commons to do that. So, it has to go to a vote before it can happen. Is it likely to happen? Yes, I suspect so. Johnson has a "crash or crash through," mentality. The real block to a deal with the EU is the House of Commons. May kept presenting a reasonable plan for a deal and the Commons blocked it. She presented a "no deal" exit plan, and the Commons blocked it. It appears that the Commons doesn't know it's arse from it's elbow. Personally, I think they are mad. Harking back to being great just won't cut it in the modern world. The UK ceased to be an Empire at the end of WWII. It was gone by the end of the 1950s. Suez was the day that the world stopped thinking of the UK as the world's leader.

But will the Commons be able to stop a No Deal exit? And will there be a general election?

A cross-party group succeeded in their bid to seize control of Commons business on Tuesday night, guaranteeing time to debate a new law to block No Deal.

Twenty-one Tory rebels were among 328 MPs who voted for the motion, which won by a majority of 27.

Legislation put forward by the cross-party group will be debated today. It would require a delay to Brexit unless there was a deal or Parliament explicitly backed leaving the EU without one by October 19.

The snappily-titled European Union (Withdrawal) (No. 6) Bill 2019 is backed by former Cabinet minsters Philip Hammond and David Gauke, a sign of how the rebel ranks have been bolstered following the change in PM.

Under the terms of the Bill, the Government must ask the EU for a delay to Brexit until January 31, 2020 if no agreement has been reached and MPs have not agreed to a no-deal exit.

If the European Council proposes an extension to a different date then the PM must accept that extension within two days, unless the House of Commons rejects it.
