No-one thinks they are going to take it home for crying out loud.
So why then are you crying about it, Black Orchid?

Oh, 'cause it is the Chinese doing it, right? Sinophobe.
Brian you are nothing but a ...
A person who asks difficult questions. Right?

So, why are you crying about it, Black Orchid?

You claim you're not worried about the Chinese taking Darwin Port home in their back pockets.

You seem to be inferring there is some other reason. So what is it?
Don’t fret BO your idol ScoMo put it to the pub test.. turns out that Darwin loves Chinese funding.
How good is funding.. How good is ScoMo.. How good is the ScoMo pub test.. Bloody ripper mate.

The Northern Territory Government did get federal government approval. Indeed, the Department of Defence even commented on it, pointing out that it was not concerned by the lease. Some people however are quite, well strange about the Chinese investing in Australian property. Joh Bjelke-Petersen once remarked that the Japanese couldn't put the land they were investing in Queensland in their back pocket and take it home with them. Same applies to the British, the Americans, the Chinese or anybody else who decides that Australia is a good investment. Some people are just Xenophobic. All the Chinese can do is actually development Darwin's commercial port better than what it is at the moment. Anything else would be foolish and make them a loss on the deal.
NT government frittered the money away almost immediately. I agree it can be taken back and that would be extremely messy but the point is the NT government should never have been able to do this without federal approval or without PUBLIC approval.
Ouch! Brian Ross points out some facts and then he is called a troll for doing so. Very strange.

I say only a 'Bushie' would think it ok to sell off a strategic military asset to a communist country with the mindset of "they can't put it in their pocket and take it home".

They have not sold off a "strategic military asset", at all Black Orchid and it's time you realised that. Darwin Commercial Port is a small part of Darwin Harbour - it is where commercial vessels dock and are loaded/unloaded. It is about 5% of the whole of Darwin Harbour and is about 1500 metres from the military docks. It is one of four different docks in the harbour. I suggest you look at Google Maps and see what I am talking about. I have been to Darwin several times. It is a medium country town in size and population. You're talking like they have leased the entire Harbour to the Chinese. Tsk, tsk.

Listen to your leader who also calls it a 'a very strategic asset' and a 'very bad decision'.

Brian Ross is quite right, Black Orchid. And the US should have leased Pearl Harbour to Japan in 1940, while Australia should have leased Darwin and Port Moresby to Japan in that same year. Anyone who thinks there would have been be any implied threat from that is Nipponphobic. To deny Japan Port Darwin and Port Moresby would have endangered Bob Menzies pig iron sales to Japan.

I will never understand the mindset of "they can't put it in their pocket and take it home" so it is ok. So let's get a few dollars and sell off our strategic assets and sea ports, airports (for $1), buildings etc. They are the very things that are not ok to sell and the reverse of sense and logic.
