I am retired ... own my own home and an electricity bill of $1,000 plus does NOT break the bank. I'd rather be warm 24/7. I get a very small Superannuation Pension and an Age Pension. I am OLD and not well.

I have no idea about this "negative" stuff. I have a Deeming Account with my Bank. If they stop paying "interest" it won't bother me. When I use my MasterCard, I pay it immediately online and have never been charges more than $1 ...

Canberra? No humidity? Gee it must have changed since I lived there. I remember semi-dry summers compared to what I experienced in Adelaide. Now, Adelaide has really dry summers.

Never been to Adelaide but lived in Melbourne ... dry heat .... Sydney has humidity.

Ths is a natural reaction...and the very reaction politicians would be aware of....hence the need
for them to consider a cashless society as well.....
If we have a negative interest rate in existence, plus a cashless society...no-one can do what youve just
thought about....withdraw and put it under a mattress...there cant be a run on the banks if there is no
cash to withdraw...all we have is digital funds....and the banks/government have us by the short and curlies....
The government is not going to come out and announce that as of a certain date fiat money is worthless...(not just yet)
and a negative interest rate isnt going to happen overnight.....

My feeling is this....interest rates will go to -0.25% to start with some time next year, and the government
will amend the regulations of the Currency (Restrictions on the Use of Cash) Bill 2019 so as the maximum
amount of any cash transaction will be $2000 (which some bureacrats want even now)
This will mean you will not able to withdraw any more than $2K on any given day from any account.
Remember the regulations dont have to pass parliament...they can be amended by the Treasurer...
Any petitions/protests etc will be simply brushed aside by government....

Then, at some stage next year, the negative interest rates will go further to minus 1 or 2 percent...
And the government will commence plans to remove cash altogether, either by reducing the maximum cash transaction
to say $500....or declare as of a certain date fiat money is worthless....everyone would then take their
money from under their mattress.....as guess what.....put it back in the bank....
We would then have no fiat money and we would all be at the mercy of the banks with digital money only....

I cant see negative interest rates existing without restrictions on the use of fiat money...otherwise,
everyone would just keep paying for everything with cash (fiat money)
The whole purpose of negative interest rates is not to stimulate the economy, as the government
will tell us....it is to prop up the banks.....
And of course if the banks have all the money...and one of them collapses...the bank bail- in will
be activated by APRA and our deposits will be raided......

As Ive always said......believe what you want to believe.....

So far, Canberra is rather free from crime. "touch wood". Not long ago they used to report on every bumper-to-bumper "accident" on the Radio and the Cops (with nothing else to do) would turn up.

However. There are paedophiles everywhere and reports of a child being "approached", and jerks who want to get something for nothing and do "hold ups" with a knife at the local IGA and a few "ram raids" at jewellery shops. Grabbing cash from a Old Lady at the ATM used to be a good news report, too.

For our American friends, Canberra is Australia's Capital City (like Washington, DC) and the population is around 400,000.
