A quiet drive

I used to drive people nuts by driving the speed limit when I had my VW Jetta Sportwagen tdi with panoramic sunroof. I got 40 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway. It was a game for me. If I had bought one with a manual transmission, I would probably still have it.

The 2.0 liter turbo diesel got 3 times the efficiency of my 5.0 liter Ford F-150 truck. The truck will tow and haul and seat people more comfortably though.

Here in Europe almost nobody drives Volkswagens. Only the poor maybe. BMW and Mercedes, and old Audis are driven high miles. New Volkswagens are very unreliable. Even Germans don't drive them. The most driven car in Germany is Renault Clio, and in Italy usually Peugeots.

Never had an American car so I can't say anything besides that it looks good. I like Ford Crown Victorias but I can't drive such here because I can never find parts for it. I'm considering about importing something from eBay, like a Dodge Challenger but it's only two doors and I'll never buy a two door car ever again. So maybe a Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack, from the newer ones. I'm bored at driving only European cars and I want some changes in my life. If American cars are with the quality of American knives like Cold Steel, Benchmade, Spyderco or Busses are, I'll definitely jump on one.

My son has a Golf and loves it. Expensive to maintain and fix though.

Our newer Jeeps come in 4 door. You can get front and rear locking differentials and take them anywhere, and it’s a convertible. Here is the new Gladiator truck.

Crown Vic’s went out of production a few years ago. About the only rwd V8 cars you can buy now are Cadillacs or Chrysler 300 or Chargers. Everyone has gone to fwd and turbo sixes for fuel efficiency.

I do like the Ford Taurus with the twin turbo 3.5 liter V6. My dad has that engine in his full size truck and it runs like a scalded dog. (Better than my V8)

I've read some online forums, they're not happy with the quality of the newer Jeeps. Could be a lie, but I've never seen or heard anyone complaining about the Mercedes G-Wagen, which I had for 3-4 years. I even had two crashes with it.

I'm thinking more about some sports car, a sedan or an estate (combi). As far as those V6, Ford Mustangs with V6s, I mean, it will be very economical, no doubts about it. But I think it takes away the true American spirit, the throaty, unrefined V8s. For a V6 - VAG have a good VR6 engine on their Golfs, Jettas, Boras and Passats.

I don't like smaller engines and V6s. Because first of all a V8 will have more resource. The engine is working lightly compared to a V6 that will always run harder. A good V8 can hardly be stressed like a 4 or 6-cylinder engine.

And as for the torque, I won't event comment on that. Either for off-road or for overtaking, a diesel or benzin V8 will rip. Mercedes have good V8s but I can't compare to an American V8 because I never had American one. But I'm expecting something insane, like really solid quality and build if it's a Dodge, Ford or even something like Impala SS, new or older one.

But that's your area of expertise. American cars here are so rare, that if you see one, you can immediately see 20 kids begin taking pictures of it and post it in the forums. Another good thing about American cars is that they don't steal them here. They're rare and nobody will steal them for parts. They only steal German cars, 70-80% of the cases it's a BMW.

I bought the V8 for the dependability and exhaust sound. The turbo 6 has more horsepower and torque, but it’s soulless as you said. Few things sound better than a 5.0 Mustang V8. The new Fords have a 10 speed transmission with selectable shift modes. Good stuff.

I did care a lot about sound when I was a kid. Now I want quiet. I got pulled over every day just so they can either harass me and request bribes, or just tell me to rev it so they can enjoy it. I had a modified 535, BMW's baby V8 how it's called.

About the torque you're saying, that's kind of subjective. Yes, it has torque. But what when the turbo ain't spooling and I need high torque at 1500 or 2000 RPMs? If it ain't a bi-turbo, the compressor won't spool at around 1-2k. When you're off-roading - you're essentially crawling. You need high torque at low speed. That's where V8s come.

And not only that, but a V8 has fewer parts. A turbo engine has turbo pathways. It'll have extra parts, a lot of additional hoses and whatnot. It'll consume extra oil. And when that turbo breaks down, and it will break down, how it happened with me more than 3 times, you'll be driving a dead man's carousel. Imagine that's an emergency situation and your turbo dies. The newer cars have so much electronics that it won't even allow you to reach higher speeds because all fuel ratios and everything will get scrambled when the turbo isn't working.

And manual's better. Simpler. I'm old fashioned and I want to be carefree. My mother's battery died, and the car was automatic. It was stuck in Park and since the auto gearbox was all electronical, they couldn't tow it. They couldn't even switch it to Neutral! Unnecessary problems.

I like a manual transmission, but they are getting hard to find. The newer CVTs and 8-10 speed automatic transmissions are becoming more efficient than a manual shifter and you know how large companies are about mandating efficiency. Their tax rates depend on CAFE standards and how efficient their line of cars are. That screws the purist. Buy a classic.
