The Church of England is to issue its first set of digital commandments to combat “cynicism and abuse” on social media.
They will be outlined today by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, in a live video message from Facebook’s British headquarters.
The church has drawn up a “digital charter” reflecting five Christian values that it will push to see honoured online and ten “community guidelines”, aimed at all internet users. People will be asked to post a link on social media to say that they pledge to abide by them.
“One of [social media’s] many joys is that it’s immediate, interactive, conversational and open-ended,” the guidance says. “This comes with downsides if users do not apply the same common sense, kindness and sound judgment we would use in a face-to-face encounter.”
Among the commandments are:
• Do not share sexually explicit, threatening or discriminatory posts.
• Speak to others online as you would speak to them in person.
• Remember that your posts can remain online for ever and you can be held accountable for them.
• Be aware of child safety when posting online.
- Verify the accuracy of anything you share online.

Thou shalt not....
Always remember what you post, send or do on the internet is not private and you are responsible.

Re: Thou shalt not....
While it's good advice, I'm not Catholic or under the church of England. I'll just take it as free advice and it's worth what I paid for it.

Pretty soon free speech will be a thing of the past. The whole thing is becoming skewed.

Re: Thou shalt not....
People can now be "anonymous" (so they think) by abusing people on their "phones", etc.
This attitude is not really new ... no longer are people at your local supermarket "pleasant", they are "aggressive" and it has nothing to do with mobile phones!
People in car parks are "aggressive" ...
It's MY TURN .... regardless.
I presume this is because we have become a ME SOCIETY ... stuff everybody else.
How VERY SAD ... I remember when people were kind to each other.
