One Nation NSW leader Mark Latham has accused Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce and other corporate sponsors of Rugby Australia of forcing Israel Folau’s sacking in comments under parliamentary privilege this morning.

Mr Latham says that Qantas’s views on Mr Folau’s comments on homosexuals going to hell on a social media post resulted in Rugby Australia fearing lost sponsorship revenue and forcing Mr Folau’s departure.

He read from a witness statement by Rugby Australia boss Raelene Castle from the Folau hearing which mentioned her concern at losing Qantas’s sponsorship because of Mr Folau’s comments.

Mr Latham added: “The head of Rugby Australia is putting a commercial value on the religious freedom of Israel Folau.

“That just shows the fix was in. Qantas knew Folau was going to get punted.

“Ms Castle was acting as the slave of [Alan] Joyce within her organisation

“She knew what he wanted without even a direct conversation with him.”

Mr Latham said: “75 years ago today young men from across the free world stormed the beaches of Normandy … to fight for the freedom of all mankind”.

“How in 2019 are so many Australians worried about the loss of religious freedom?” Mr Latham said.

“How in 2019 do we look at Israel Folau and wonder how a football player and resident of NSW has lost his job?

“We’re fighting dictatorial corporations who purchase … control of sporting codes.

“These big corporate chiefs preach diversity . . but they’re trying to impose uniformity.”

Mr Latham quoted Ms Castle’s written evidence which said days before Folau’s post Rugby Australia had commenced commercial negotiations with Qantas on further sponsorship.”

Mr Latham rose later and said “There’s no doubt Israel Folau was sacked by Qantas.”

This isn’t about free speech, political correctness gone mad or religious freedom. It’s about Israel Folau spitting in his employer’s face. For that, he should be sacked.

Let's pretend that Raven has some type of platform that reaches millions of people. Raven also holds the view that rangas are soulless creatures and should be segregated from society.

As someone who holds such a platform he needs to be careful what views he expressess — particularly if they’re extreme, out of step with community sentiment, potentially upsetting to a large number of people or could cause his employer harm.

Let's say his boss asks Raven to keep his views on rangas to himself. They don’t share his view, like a number of his followers are unlikely to, and his constant bleating about it — no matter his staunch belief — isn’t helpful.

It’s not even really related to the job they pay Raven to do.

If Raven continued to ignore his boss and bring negative attention to his employer, what do think they will do?

So, why should Folau get a free ride for blatantly and repeatedly disregarding his employer’s requests to not screech about the damnation of gay people?

He’s done it before and it plunged Rugby Australia into controversy and chaos.

They asked him not to do it again. So, when he decided he would, they were right to tear up his contract.

We could talk about how his Bible-bashing is hypocritical and selective.

We could point out that his decision to cover his body in tattoos is a sin.

Or that God told us to not judge, lest we be judged.

Or that Jesus preached love and acceptance and tolerance, and never said a single word about homosexuality.

Or that just a few short years ago, when he was eager to boost his profile, expand his fan base and pick up lucrative sponsorship deals, he appeared on the front page of a gay newspaper.

And we could faux-debate his right to free speech, even though he was perfectly free to say whatever he liked — but not be free from consequences.

The fact of the matter is Folau signed a contract with his employer, for which he was paid handsomely, and made a series of commitments to not bring the sport into disrepute, not to distract from his on-field activities, and not to target specific groups in a hateful or offensive way.

He has breached that contract. His sacking is entirely of his own doing.
