Most post polling reveals that Palin’s debate performance went down well; arresting the negative slide she had with that disastrous set of interviews.

It is the economy.

There is a Republican in the Oval Office and the President is the one most look to in times of trouble, if they want change they will naturally tend to support the other party.

Mac handled the bail out vote crises very badly, grandstanding by suspending his campaign and then rushing to Washington. This only slowed down the negotiations as the Dems wanted to insure he got no credit for a solution and it made Obama (despite have no solutions either) appear to be a rock of calm.

I really can’t understand why Mac did not point out Clinton deregulated the very banking-bond market that percipitated the crises and then attack Obama’s economic proposals, which would make the crises far worse, such as razing capital gains tax in a credit crunch.

Taxing a major source of credit investment.

Mac should have boxed him in and asked do you still support that and either made him back off, looking weak and indecisive or made him stick with a proposal most economists would then scourge.

Then attack Obama on his health care plans, how are you going to pay for a huge new government program in this time of economic trouble?

Instead Mac wants to “turn the page” on the economic issue, a bad tactic as this is the issue most Americans are worried about.

The only way to do this is through a huge foreign policy crises or some major hits on Obama’s character Jeremiah Wright, corrupt Daily machine, Weatherman terror friends ect (which they are using Palin to do, the pit bull) but the latter is unlikely to work in a time of economic pain.

Watching the second debate now- Obama speaks so much better, even when he says similar things to MCCain. And McCain reveals his Republican colour even as he tries to stress how much of a maverick he is. I think Obama is winning again.

I don't think any of the debates have put a decisive nail in anyone's coffin. There's been no "Youth and inexperience" moment, no Gore raging Kruschev-like in the face of a stoic Bush, no Nixonian failure that could close the door on either party. Polls be damned, this is still wide open.

Look, Obama is in a very weak position. If you listen to the debate he's trying to defend a tax hike the same way Mondale lost to Reagen. All McCain needs is a break away sound bite like "I don't beleive Americans are under taxed. I believe the Government is over-fed!" which will be played over and over in the following days and he'll turn back the tide. If he cannot produce this, then yes I agree his campaign will fail, but it seems simplicity itself to rock back the surge of Obama here. Frogen may even have a point about Clinton's deregulation caused the current crisis, but Clinton is fucking bullet proof right now and it would look too much like he's defending Bush - who is tainted meat.

Hell, even this current tactic of saying Obama hung out with domestic terrorists might work. I mean shit, that photo of Kerry with Fonda killed his war hero cred.

I would hope you are right but the debates were Mac’s huge chance to highlight concerns that Obama is really and unknown quality, and Obama has erased much of that fear with his competent performance and better presentation on the one issue haunting Americans right now, the economy.

Mac should have used that over taxed argument when the crises hit, and highlighted Obama proposals to raise taxes on capital gains, he still can, but he has missed a crucial time, right when the country was at the fault line of deciding about the bail out package, the coverage was huge, Mac grandstanded while Obama was remaining largely silent (usual platitudes) and calm, this is when Mac really should have been punching him on taxes.

The personal attack thing could erode some of Obama’s support (God knows Palin is good at it!) but it is well worn and unless there is something big and new about him, I think he may have already absorbed the damage that can do.

Though if I were Mac I would run Rev “God Dam’ America ads like a plague.
