Don't be foolish, please. Australians are supposed to be knowledgeable! The only countries with a higher debt load than the U.S. are Portugal, Italy and Greece. Failed states, with massive unemployment. The U.S. pays interest on its debt, and those payments increase as the debt grows. With a large portion of the federal budget allocated for interest payments, that leaves less room for other spending. And the more money the government borrows, the more pressure it puts on private borrowing. If the government wants to borrow more, that jacks up interest rates on everyone else.

Also, I've never in my entire life, heard about anyone, I literally mean ANYONE from Europe to get a loan to pay for his or her education! That's something very typical only for America. You get a loan to study in a college, and then spend the next 15 or 20 years working your ass off to destruction so you settle the huge debt you personally have! The homeless epidemic in USA is another big problem, plus the U.S. has the highest incarceration rates in the whole Western world.
