Political views more likely to come from generation than age, experts say

I think we vote the way we vote based on our experiences. Our generation is part of what determines our experiences. I was apolitical until I was about 26-27, but I grew up in a conservative, religious home, and was taught the value of hard work and self reliance. It all adds up to conservative beliefs. My parents have done well and are happy and I was heavily influenced by my parents, even if I didn't realize it until I moved out on my own.

I guess a person raised by a single mother who uses government to provide much of their income or lifestyle would think differently, especially if it provided their education.

When I did University, my first year Politics lecturer explained there were two theories as to explain party identification.

The first was the "if you're not a conservative by the age of 40 you become one," theory.

The second was the "mother's milk"theory, whereby you gained your party ID from your parents.

This represents a third alternative. I like this theory better than the other two.

Whereas I had excellent lecturers and did an excellent course created by and taught by the Politics Department.
