ABC staff undergoing ‘gender transition’ to be given paid leave

Employees at the ABC may soon be offered time off for “gender transition” under a proposed new enterprise bargaining agreement.

In what would be a landmark move for a taxpayer-funded organisation, the national broadcaster is considering offering an unspecified amount of paid leave for any employee undergoing gender reassignment.

It is understood an extended amount of unpaid leave will also be offered.

In a memo circulated to ABC staff on Tuesday last week, a number of new amendments were listed as part of the broadcaster’s negotiations with the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) and the Media and Arts Alliance (MEAA) in relation to a proposed new enterprise agreement.

Among them was a proposal listed under “enhanced entitlements: which includes a casual conversion clause and “gender transition leave”.
