6 years is a crushing sentence for an old man like him.
According to a reporter in Rome on ABC 24 tonight
Pell was reported in the Italian newspapers as living a life of lavish luxury at the Vatican.
To be an old man in a spartan jail with no intellectual stimulation -
and poor food etc -
and to go from a Cardinal in Rome to just another bum in the shower is a terrible step down.
He will be absolutely miserable in jail.
I doubt that he will survive before he dies.

It's a tragedy for his victims and a tragedy for him.
I have more sorrow for his victims than for his comfort.

Me too.
It's time that the victims and their families were paid substantial sums of money.

He got more time than Rolf Harris who was found guilty of 12 counts of sexual assault. Rolf served less than 3 years.

Yes - maybe the appeals court will reduce his sentence?

he has to win an appeal first bobby....3 judges will decide if he has a case

a few of us can see a few holes in the trial....it will be interesting to see what the judges think..

he will be protected in jail thats for sure at least I hope so........

I feel we are just short of stoning the man to be honest...

Let's see what will happen.
It will be interesting.
It reminds me of the Lindy Chamberlain case.

Is it just me or do others suspect we have not been told everything?

I think a lot of the trial has been kept secret.

Dozens of Australian news organisations and journalists face possible "orders for imprisonment" or fines for alleged contempt of court over their coverage of Cardinal George Pell's conviction for child sexual abuse.

Thirty-six news agencies and individuals have been called to a Supreme Court hearing on April 15 to answer accusations they breached a suppression order when publishing material about the trial last year.

Among those named in documents filed by the Victorian Department of Public Prosecutions on Friday are The Age editor Alex Lavelle, Herald Sun editor Damon Johnston, 2GB host Ray Hadley and Channel Nine presenter Deborah Knight.

Victorian County Court Chief Judge Peter Kidd placed a non-publication order on all of the evidence and the verdict in Pell's trial, which was held last year.

The order was made to protect the proceedings of a planned second trial for unrelated offences, which was subsequently dropped.

Thanks Orchid,
Pell can use that in his appeal.

My internet provider is down.
I can only use a silly mobile phone.

Cardinal George Pell’s appeal will be broadcast live from the Victorian Supreme Court next Wednesday.

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria Justice Anne Ferguson, President of the Court of Appeal Justice Chris Maxwell and Justice Mark Weinberg, will oversee the hearing.

It will be live-streamed on the Supreme Court of Victoria’s website, and accessible around the world.

Pell is appealing his conviction for sexually abusing two Melbourne choirboys in the 1990s. If the conviction is upheld he won’t seek a reduced sentence.

He has been behind bars since February, and was handed a six-year prison sentence by County Court Chief Judge Peter Kidd in March.

Pell was ordered to serve at least three years and eight months of that sentence after being convicted by a jury in December of one charge of sexual penetration of a child and four charges of committing an indecent act with or in the presence of a child.
