The man who killed Bondi schoolgirl Samantha Knight has been let out of jail unsupervised up to 20 times despite fears he will reoffend, a Sydney court has heard.

Key points:

A large crowd was in the public gallery at the NSW Supreme Court for today's hearing

The court was told serial paedophile Michael Anthony Guider had been let out of prison up to 20 times

Guider's lawyer said he could be suitably managed in the community

In 2002, part-time baby sitter and gardener Michael Anthony Guider was jailed for 16 years for the manslaughter of nine-year-old Samantha.

She stopped breathing in 1986 after he gave her sleeping pills with the intention of taking indecent photos of her.

The child's body has never been found and Guider refuses to tell police where it is.

He is due to be released on June 6 but NSW Attorney-General Mark Speakman has applied to keep him in jail for another 12 months and to introduce an extended supervision order of five years.

Guider, who is now 69, briefly appeared in the NSW Supreme Court via video link from Long Bay jail wearing sunglasses.

In arguing to keep him in jail, the Attorney-General's lawyer, David Kell SC, described Guider as a serial paedophile with a long history of indecently assaulting children.

The court heard he has previously been jailed for sex offences against numerous other young victims — both boys and girls — from two to 16-years-old.

"He has no remorse and lacks insight," Mr Kell told the court.

"He remains a serious danger to the community."

Mr Kell described Guider as someone who "grooms" the parents of pre-pubescent children.

He said Guider preys on vulnerable single mothers to get access to their children.

The court heard although Guider has shown no remorse, he has been temporarily let out of jail up to 20 times unsupervised as part of his rehabilitation.

Arguing for his release, Guiders' lawyer Mathew Johnstone said his clients' methodology was known and he can be suitably managed in the community.

A large crowd packed the public gallery for the hearing including Samantha Knight's mother, Tess, some of Guider's victims who are now adults and police officers who worked on the case.

Outside court Tess Knight said she is "not satisfied that Michael Guider is safe for release".

Neil Tuckerman who was one of the investigating officers on the Samantha Knight case said he was horrified to learn that Guider had already been out in the community.

He said the only way to stop him reoffending is to keep him in jail.

Justice Richard Button will make a decision on the matter before next Wednesday when Guider is due to walk free.
Our justice system keeps failing us ... When will they ever fix it?

He should be left to rot in Jail and have no chance of release EVER ...especially in light that he will not show police where the body is.

He should get the electric chair .. SLowly..

Would you be happy to turn on the switch and watch him die slowly?

There is no death penalty in Australia, so your question is obtuse.

That's because corrupt politicians, crooked cops and bribe taking judges want to be sure they will never be executed......As they all should be.
I have a dream
A world free from the plague of Islam
A world that has never known the horrors of the cult of death.
My hope is that in time, Islam will be nothing but a bad dream
