Melbourne police break man's arm in mistaken arrest at Fitzroy's Hares & Hyenas bookshop
By Damian McIver

Updated earlier today at 12:01am

There are fears an innocent man may lose the use of his left arm
after he was seriously injured during a botched police raid in Melbourne.
Key points:

The arrest was the result of mistaken identity, police say
Officers were searching for a man suspected of a home invasion and carjacking
In a statement, police say they "acknowledge the distress this situation has caused the victim", who remains in hospital

The operation in Fitzroy, in Melbourne's inner north, is now the subject of an internal Victoria Police investigation.

Residents said officers raided their apartment, which adjoins LGBT community bookshop and cafe Hares & Hyenas on Johnston Street, about 2:00am on Saturday.

"The police broke in through our garage as they thought that an armed member of a 'Lebanese' gang was inside," said bookshop co-owners Rowland Thomson and Crusader Hillis in a post on Facebook.

"At no stage did they identify themselves as police. They just stormed into a dark room shining torches and it was impossible to identify them as police."

They said another man, Nik Dimopoulos, ran from the building "thinking it was an anti gay home invasion", and was subsequently arrested on the street.

Looks like the Victorian cops are the most vicious in Australia.
This man had no weapons and was innocent.

I hope he sues both the Victoria police and the officers personally for $50 million.

A very unfortunate event and I think more will come out about this but you can't have it both ways. One minute you want the cops to be more aggressive with the Melbourne gangs and the next minute you freak out when they are.

How the hell could they break his arm in about 7 places?
They have cut the nerves so his arm will be a useless limb that might be amputated.
This is unheard of for a simple arrest
of a person who had no weapons.
Why couldn't a cop just knock on the door at a more sensible time?
They even had the wrong address.

I haven't heard anything about his arm being broken in 7 places nor anything about amputation. It was a very unfortunate situation and will be investigated and I sure the poor guy will be compensated. Not that that makes up for it but I still think there could be more to it.

It was on the radio 3AW today.
The injuries he suffered are outrageous.

Well there's nothing about that on the net so I won't comment until I read it.

Even if you're being arrested in a case of mistaken identity you still have to follow police directions.

If he was compliant I doubt that would happen.

He's a pillow bighter so he probably enjoyed being roughed up by burly men.

That's why I keep saying that I think there is more to it. It just doesn't ring right.
