It's mostly culture and discipline. They work their tails off to get a valuable job instead of working in some sweat shop. We have less drastic options and don't work as hard.(on average)

Of all the equipment that I work on, Toshiba and Mitsubishi comanufacture the best UPS' on the market. They are bulletproof.

Here is an example of some of the UPS that I service. It's a Toshiba G9000 Uninterruptible Power Supply. Best box on the market.

They are not smarter but work much harder than us during there education period and their parents push them hard.

Failure to keep up is a family shame and the kids feel that pressure.

Our kids have to compete with them so hence the rise of the western tiger mum.

Well, that's a good advert for Asian technology.

I think they have more discipline with regard to incessant study to please their family but, like I said, it also leaves them with little or no social skills that are fundamentally important in many professions.

I think University does that to a lot of people.
Many graduates have little or no social skills.

My youngest went to a selective high school where asians were in the majority and they were always at the top because all they ever did was study. They were sent to before school study, after school study, pre uni study in early high school etc. Saturdays and Sundays they all had their heads in their books while the other kids played soccer and footy.

I don't think that makes them any smarter than us and they ended up with absolutely no social skills and are unbalanced in their professions.

If you want to be a doctor for instance you need the balance and the social skills. One university actually changed its entrance requirements for medicine for this very reason whereby you didn't necessarily need the highest marks to get in.
In the last 2 years I got a real insight into coaching in preparation for selective schools.

We took ours to a coaching school in the last term of year 5, and they looked at us like we were from another planet and said you should have been here 3 years ago. Nearly all of the kids were Asian or Indian, and not what I'd call well rounded or socialised kids.

She got into a selective school but we actually took a different option, and it's the best decision we ever made. I've heard first hand stories from teachers in Sydney Girls/Boys high, and kids who are into sport or have an actual personality become very bored and have no friends. None of the kids live in area so no social life.

I'm not putting down academic achievement, but being well rounded, having a social life, doing sport is all part of the puzzle.

BTW, my girls said Sydney Girls High smells like curry. YUCK ;)

If I had the time to do over again I would do it differently. I also think girls handle it all better than boys. Boys tend to completely lose their shyt around year 9.

I wish we pushed her a bit more thru primary, not to the extent of not having a life but to make up for a couple of lame public school teachers.

My boy will be interesting. 2 years old and cop this,
Identify numbers up to 100.
Can identify all letters and can spell his name

That’s good. Make sure he is ahead of his classmates when he gets to school. He’ll work harder because he will always think he’s smarter. He’ll expect himself to be at the head of the class.
