We are a comparatively rich country. Foreign aid shows that we care for other nations and their people. It also ensures that there are fewer refugees and so for the Xenophobes, fewer Asylum Seekers. However, Xenophobes are subject to what Howard called "the politics of jealousy." They are jealous that other people being given money, doesn't matter what the circumstance is or was, they're just jealous. Australia pays less foreign aid per capita than most other developed nations.

I suppose we could just trim back spending. Howard did that. I lost three jobs in six months because of John Howard and Mandy Vanstone. Made life very difficult there for a while for me. I dislike Tories because of their short-sightedness, Bobby. If we trim back spending, how about we cut Defence? Or how about Infrastructure? Mmmm, how about the environment? How about Education? How about Health? How about social security? Which one are you willing to sacrifice, Bobby? In a letter to the Morning Bulletin Rockhampton Sat 27 Feb 2015 written by N.W.H.Timms he gave this summary on the foreign aid being paid out by the Australian tax payer . Following is the reason why we lack adequate funding for infrastructure in Australia...
FOREIGN AID... Australia has given $359 Million to Congo, $397 Million to Eygypt, $981 Million to Ethiopia, $1.4 Billion to Haiti, $351 Million to Hamas, $1.8 Billion to Iraq, $463 Million to Jorden, $304 Million to Kazakhstan ,$816 Million to Kenya, $1.45 Billion to Lybia, $622 Million to Mexico, $404 Million to Mozambique, $456 Million to Nigeria, $2 Billion to Pakistan, $698 Million to Russia, $566 Million to South Africa, $698 million to Senegal, $870 Million to Sudan, $ 554 million to Tanzania, $451 Million to Uganda, $331 Million to Zambia, $650 Million to Indonesia, and $500 million to New Guinea, so apart from the massive pay out to our totally useless politicians and thanks to our politicians who are obviously subservient to the UN/IMF/World Bank/China Infrastructure Bank, Australian tax payers have become an endless financial supply for all these bludging countries.

I remember reading a while back that it cost us 4 billion to become a founding member of the HK
Infrastructure Bank...Im sure I heard Cormann spruiking once how this money would help our exports to India
as it would go towards upgrading their ports...figure that one out.....I have no idea if the stats are yearly, or just one year

The government reduced our foreign aid to Indonesia by almost half in 2015 (under Abbott) but in 2017/18 we still gave them $359 million even though they spend it on military helicopters etc rather than the people who need it.

No, not quite, Bobby. All I would propose is that we keep our debt under control. The Tories have allowed it to blow out to over 600 billion, despite their claims of being "better economic managers". The ALP will bring it back under control and reduce it to what ever it is believed is manageable (ask Treasury and Finance that question, not me). Australia has been at various times a debtor nation or a creditor nation. Debt is not anything to be afraid of, Bobby. Our level of debt compared to some other developed countries is substantially lower, even at over 600 billion. We have a rich economy, we can afford to carry some debt.
