It would be socialization if they were taking a perment controlling interest in the effected financial institutions, they are not.

They are buying up a significant amount of the bonds stopping the institutions from collapsing and then over time hoping the value of the bonds will increase with increased market confidence and a rebound in property prices at which point they will sell the bonds back into the market.

This was done during the savings and loan crises, it worked and even provided the US treasury with long-term profit.

Unless a better package is negotiated with Congress leaders I tend to agree it is bad, yes. Especially because it was expected to pass and it has already affected Wall St so badly.

Interesting that Frogen mentioned the Savings and Loan crisis of the 80's which at that time was said to be a debacle that would hobble generations of Americans yet to come, much like the current "crisis."

I was agreeing with you Frogen. I the S&L "Crisis" was on my mind as well and I was recalling reports from that time that made it out that the sky was falling and would continue to call for generations, when in fact "it" worked.

It appears this bail out is hugely unpopular with the American people who, it appears, haven't taken all that kindly to a 'socialise the losses' philosophy with their hard earned tax dollars to save Wall Street bankers from themselves. And it doesn't look like either party wants to be burdened with the legacy of having got multi-millionaire (billionaire) traders off the hook. On the other hand, there may be no other way out. The US is headed for a recession, probably no doubt about that and its not likely there's much that can be done will stop it... but will a bail out of any kind avert even worse.. A depression?

Are we at the stage where a 'Shades of Vietnam' style withdrawal from Iraq is on the cards?
