Red another point for you.
For someone to arrive legally from a country which is red flagged as high risk like Nigeria, they arrive with a police/health check and pay a substantial deposit.
If they turn around and claim asylum it's much better than a total unknown arriving by boat.
It's actually really hard for people from developing countries to even get a tourist visa for Australia and the that so many people are arriving by plane and claiming asylum is an indication of the tsunami of boat people we'd have if border security was relaxed.

One untrustworthy source citing another untrustworthy source quoting another untrustworthy source.

When that visa deal was announced I suspected something like this. Time to bin the arrangement and don't victim blaming us for being taken advantage of.Redneck wrote: ↑Fri Feb 15, 2019 9:48 amhttps://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/categ ... ms-report/
PETALING JAYA: Syndicates are using counterfeiting networks in the country to smuggle people into Australia, taking advantage of the visa agreement between the two nations, an Australian news outlet reported.
According to ABC News, Malaysian passport holders enjoy an easier passage to Australia compared to those from other countries and this has led to people smugglers helping nationals of other countries assume fake Malaysian identities so they can enter Australia easily.
About 10,500 people from Malaysia are in Australia unlawfully, ABC News notes, adding the sum was “significantly more than any other country”.
According to the report, citizens from Asean countries would travel to Malaysia without a visa where they would fraudulently obtain a Malaysian passport for as little as RM3,849.
Citizens from Asean countries including Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines come under far more scrutiny when applying to travel to Australia compared to those from Malaysia.
ABC News quoted former Australian Border Force (ABF) Commissioner Roman Quaedvlieg as saying that the combination of an easy passage into Malaysia and an easy way to obtain false identification makes Malaysia “the perfect staging ground for people smugglers”.

Dont disagree at all cods, but the boats will continue to be turned back so it wont last long if it does in fact restart.Gordon wrote: ↑Fri Feb 15, 2019 9:55 amRed another point for you.

I realise there are possibly millions of refugees moving around the world looking for a better life. Most probably have passports to get to Indonesia/ Malaysia etc so the plane option is the way to go which is what is happening.
It just makes me laugh when the government makes such a big issue of the boats and turns a blind eye to it continuing on planes. I do accept that people arent dying on planes.
(On Documentation:- Actually I seem to recall when the boats were arriving the people smugglers got the refugees to destroy their documentation claiming this would help them get asylum in Oz which was nonsense!)

Why are you saying they're turning a blind eye to plane arrivals? From what I hear (apart from the Malaysian anomaly) it's getting harder and harder for people from high risk countries to even get a tourist visa. Immigration even search through their devices to see if they have scanned documents and if it looks like they're here to stay, they point them back to the boarding gate.Redneck wrote: ↑Fri Feb 15, 2019 10:09 amDont disagree at all cods, but the boats will continue to be turned back so it wont last long if it does in fact restart.Gordon wrote: ↑Fri Feb 15, 2019 9:55 amRed another point for you.

Short of closing the airports, what would you have the Govt do?

The government are certainly turning a blind eye to the numbers arriving by plane while ranting about the numbers that arrived by boatGordon wrote: ↑Fri Feb 15, 2019 10:24 amWhy are you saying they're turning a blind eye to plane arrivals? I dont know the details at all of how many are refused entry
I am just pointing out that we are getting thousands arriving by plane and either claiming refugee status or overstaying visas so all this fear mongering about arrivals by boat is a load of horseshit as far as I am concerned!
The majority of Aussies couldnt give a stuff about drownings at sea, I suspect its just this fear we are going to be overrun by tinted coloured muslim people as a result of Morrisons blustering!

Re: People smugglers now use planes
The figure we need to look at is what % of all people who arrive by plane overstay or claim asylum. I reckon it would be very low. What do you want ro do, make it so hard to get a tourist visa that nobody comes here?
And yes the Govt uses boat arrivals as a scare tactic but it doesn't mean border security is not a valid issue.
If relaxed security we'd be flooded with boat arrivals
The Greens and the Labor left believe in open borders, do you want that?

I believe that the real reason the asylum seekers arriving by boat were without identification was identity theft. i.e. They were assuming identities of people who would have a greater chance of being granted asylum, and thats another major issue. If most of these boat asylum seekers are actually not who they claim to be then who are they?
