Christmas Island is an Australian territory and, undoubtedly, the infrastructure (buildings) haven't been demolished, so "we" can open (or shut) them when ever we need to .... say, the first sign of a leaky boat heading this way from Indonesia.

WE do have a right to only allow those that WE determine need asylum to come to Australia, provided they are healthy and free from criminal activities.

The asylum seekers are detained until they are fully cleared, health-wise as well as criminal-wise. If they kept their Passports it would make it a hell of a lot easier for the Authorities to clear them.

The left-overs on Manus Island (or wherever it is) have NOT been cleared and can return from whence they came tomorrow (at Australian taxpayer expense), but no ... they are determined to get to Australia and I heard Dutton saying that most were "criminals" ... do we really need MORE criminals in Australia? I don't think so.

Now it appears that they might be able to come to Australia on "medical" grounds ... and once here, use our Laws to sue all and sundry at OUR expense.

I am happy to have genuine asylum seekers settle in Australia, provided they are cleared, health-wise, and are able to find employment and not be a burden on the taxpayer.
