Good question, Mechie. PHONy supporters tend to be poorly educated and are often those that have been "left behind" by the massive economic changes our society has experienced. PHONy and Hanson represent Australia as it is seen through a romantic lense, all golden coloured. They dislike change and they dislike Australians who aren't white, Christian and well dressed. They tend to dislike Gays and Lesbians and hate transgender people who they perceive in particular as threatening.

Unfortunately for them and fortunately for the rest of us, you cannot turn back the clock. That Australia, as represented by the Racist White Australia Policy is long dead and gone thankfully. The Australia of today is a strong, multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multicultural society with a cosmopolitan outlook on the world.
