Murray Darling incidents continue

Post by Black Orchid » Wed Jan 09, 2019 6:39 pm

An estimated 10,000 were killed just weeks ago, and locals fear native stocks could be all but wiped out this time.

Hundreds of thousands of fish have been killed along a stretch of the Lower Darling River in New South Wales in a second major incident which has led some experts to fear whole populations of local native fish have been wiped out.

Residents near the Menindee Lakes are reporting what is the second major fish kill along a 20km stretch of water near Weir 32.

An incident before Christmas saw an estimated 10,000 fish die.

Locals have been posting photos of dying fish washed up along the shores of the lakes which are about 100km east of Broken Hill.

And local fish experts are saying that it could all but wipe out the populations of Murray cod and other native fish, raising serious questions about the way WaterNSW is managing the lakes system.

Two years ago the lakes were almost full. But WaterNSW has been releasing water and allowing extraction upstream for irrigation at a rate that has left the lakes almost completely dry.

According to the WaterNSW website, there is just 2.5% of water remaining in the lakes.

Rod McKenzie, a fishing journalist and angler, who runs tours of the Murray-Darling, said he feared the kill would spell the end of a once great fishery.

“It’s an absolute tragedy. This is a world-scale fish kill, but the catastrophe has been so well orchestrated and there is so much money involved you won’t get to the bottom of it,” he said.

NSW independent MP Jeremy Buckingham said he vomited after visiting the Darling River and saw the scale of the mass fish deaths.

Mr Buckingham travelled to Menindee, near Broken Hill on Wednesday, after a Facebook video posted by local farmers Dick Arnold and Rob McBride showing the large, bloated carcasses of native and critically endangered Murray cod went viral.

The former Greens MP posted his own video to social media, highlighting the mass death.

“Australia, you need to hang your head in shame. Look at this,” Mr Buckingham said, as he retched while holding a rotting fish.

Mr Buckingham, who has been campaigning on the health of river systems his "entire political life," said it was "the most disgusting scene you could possibly imagine".

"The cod that I was holding apparently was somewhere in the order of 50 to 60 years old, to see it dead, and to see hundreds of them if not thousands of them in the area where we were, dead like that, is truly appalling," he said.

"They are rotting, they’re large corpses, they're bloated in the water. There’s this scum of putrescent grease across the top of the water and it's truly very, very sad."

NSW Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair has told SBS News he received "direct threats" from members of the public after up to a million fish were found dead in the Darling River system at Menindee, NSW.

Mr Blair was criticised by some locals who claim water levels are low because of the amount diverted to irrigators.

The minister ordered an urgent report from the Department of Primary Industries and WaterNSW into the "devastating" incident, which some residents have labelled a "man-made disaster", but he was ridiculed by locals who claim he avoided them during a visit to Menindee.

Water has been released from the Menindee Lakes to South Australia under the Murray-Darling Basin Authority's approval and because of the drought there has been nothing to replenish the system, Mr Blair says.

"There have been different amounts of water released at different times. Some of it was to promote fish breeding events. Some of it is to go down to improve the health and sustain the communities in the lower Darling.

"And some of it has been sent down to South Australia. That is what happens with the Murray-Darling Basin plan."

The NSW Government is in talks with the Commonwealth about operating rules and water-sharing arrangements, he added.

What an absolute disgrace this is. Murray Cod are critically endangered.

Let South Australia supply themselves with water. WTF is up with this? :WTF

Carp have been filmed floating and gasping on the banks of the Darling River at Menindee after the town in far west NSW was struck by another mass fish kill.

The NSW Government is investigating after thousands of fish were found dead this morning — less than a month after about a million fish were killed in the same area.

Fisheries officers from NSW's Department of Primary Industries (DPI) are on their way to the river to confirm the number of fish killed.

Large numbers of bony bream and a smaller number of other species have perished, according to the DPI.

Video shows the grim scene that greeted locals this morning of exhausted fish gasping on the water's surface.

Menindee Tourism Association president Rob Greggory said the event was "tragic".

"What we are seeing is probably the last lot of fish that are here now," he said.

"There will be none left."

Allow the rivers to flow again to cool them and deepen them.

This isn’t rocket science - We just need some honest Politicians to get it done.

Things are pretty bad if even teh stinking carp are dying.

Maybe this is a way to get rid of them, kill the lot and start again.

Natural phenomena, has always happened, always will.
Of course that doesn't matter to the Greens and insipid anal polyps like Buckingham.

They will continue to lie, like all leftists and exploit any opportunity just so they can point fingers and proclaim their virtuosity
