Chefs at a popular Melbourne restaurant were circled by a group of youths before being repeatedly punched and kicked in a brutal attack.

Witnesses have told 9news.com.au the group of youths, who were of African appearance, were hanging around St Kilda beach-front restaurant Donovans last night, throwing bottles and standing in front of traffic.

At 10.30pm, a few members of the group approached a chef, who was standing outside a side door of the restaurant after finishing a shift, and began to attack him.

"It started off with three or four of them throwing punches," the witness said.

"Then another five or so marched across the road and circled one of the chefs."

The circled chef was repeatedly bashed by the group, who were armed with metal poles, as he tried helplessly to escape.

The group at one point even barricaded the door so other employees couldn't come to the aid of their colleagues.

Police are investigating after a man was beaten unconscious by a group of around 20 people and his wallet stolen following a wild brawl along the popular St Kilda foreshore in Melbourne's inner south-east.

Victoria Police's Public Order Response Team was called to the area after a fight broke out between a group of young people gathered at the popular beach near at Jacka Boulevard about 10:30pm on Saturday.

Acting Superintendent Mark Langhorn said the violence began after a large group of young people arrived at the beach and a brawl swiftly broke out.

"He was kicked whilst he was on the ground, he was unconscious...his phone and his wallet were stolen:

"It was just very quickly that the group of the African-Australians came together: there was a smaller group down there, but then [the larger group] started arriving," he said.

"So throughout the night no one had been down there drinking or anything like that, everyone was well-behaved, it was just when the large group came together trouble started … then it sort of flowed onto the public."

Upon arrival, police used capsicum spray to disperse the crowd, before arresting a 19-year-old man on Acland Street nearby, who was charged with assaulting police, making threats to kill and breaching bail.

A group of youths in Melbourne has been accused of attacking male beachgoers and stealing from the bags of swimmers in a series of incidents police have described as deeply disturbing.

Police were last night called to Chelsea Beach, in Melbourne's south-east, where the group is alleged to have assaulted five men, one with a glass bottle and others with a yellow plastic cricket bat.

Police said the group — whose members were described as being of African appearance and aged in their late teens and early 20s — "approached" the unattended belongings of swimmers on the beach.

A male swimmer who confronted them was assaulted by the group, which then fled with mobile phones and purses, police said.

It is alleged they attacked three other men aged 25 to 30 shortly afterwards, stealing the mobile phone of one of them.

Following this, a 19-year-old man who was sitting on the beach was struck in the head with a glass bottle, and was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Two others were treated by paramedics at the scene.

Nobody has been arrested and police are keen to talk to witnesses.
