I do however promote the harvest of possums, especially brushtails. I think it is actually illegal in most states. By harvesting possums, we would get a sustainable soruce of meat right at our front doorsteps, we would be able to grow a lot more food in our own backyards, and there would be a lot more birds around. Brushtails are in far higher than normal numbers do to suburbia etc, and their high numbers upsets the balance of nature, especially when they go round eating bird eggs.
well if dogs are killing koalas that is a very serious problem ( cant blame cats this time? ).
What is possum meat like? I havent had the desire to try croc yet and most likely wont..dont telll me it tastes like chicken..
I cant see possum meat catching on tbh..but if theyre numbers are so high and they do so much damage to birds etc maybe its time to consider culling a few and using hopefully making use of the meat for pet food or for anyone who would be willing to eat them..they are pests in more ways than that as well.

All they have to do is remove the ban. I think there would be enough people around willing to eat them.

I had in mind a model more like recreational fishing. That would still leave plenty of 'safe havens' for them, in the backyards of people who don't kill them.
You can buy possum meat in some fancy restaurants. I think it comes from Tasmania.

Oh ok..have heard there is an abundant supply of possums in Tasmania.
So that is what a 'safe haven' is..(the back yard of someone who 'likes' possums)..not sure how safe or sustainable that sounds /is?
But then I dont know about safe havens either so...but if it works in marine settings it must be workeable/applicable in other situations ?

It works far better on land than in marine settings. Possums don't really need that much protection. They are like rats. They have benefitted greatly from human alteration of the environment. You couldn't get rid of them if you tried.

I don't. I care about the environment. That's why I promote sustainable food sources, like whales. I usually throw the term hippy around for people who don't think things through.
Yes I know you care about the environment FD, but argueing for whales to be used a sustainable source is going to elicit some prickly responses ..even if you are right..try argueing the same thing for a cute koala ?
You can't get much cuter than a lamb (chop).
