The UN is a major global problem bwian, you know that.
There are many things that nations are cajoled into being signatories to... which denies their sovereignty by vesting the UN with authority.

It's time many nations pulled out of many things they are signatories too and and past time the UN was dissolved.

Domestically? Never.

Internationally? 1999 East Timor Affair.

I hadn't read what the UN actually "does" before.
  • Maintain International Peace and Security
  • Protect Human Rights
  • Deliver Humanitarian Aid
  • Promote Sustainable Development
  • Uphold International Law
Oh, and now, the Member States are working together to fight CLIMATE CHANGE.

They aren't very good at what their Charter says, are they?

Take it up with the member states, Neferti. The UN is simply a clearing house for what they want to talk about. The UN is powerless without the backing of the member states.

Here is a question to those proposing a withdrawal from the UN. What should Australia or even the world replace it with?

We have experienced and seen what Great Power politics can and has done around the world before the establishment of first the League and then later the United Nations. Do you want a return to that? Really? Australia is a relatively minor player in world politics, we might be safe but what happens to the peripheral nations to Russia or China? What happens to the small nations in Africa, Asia, Latin and Southern America? Where do they go to appeal for help when something goes wrong? There is no imprimatur which could justify military or political action without the UN giving it's OK. No force for fixing world diseases (ie Smallpox, Measles, etc.), no organisation to fight the outbreak of a seriously infectious disease (ie Ebola). No one to help refugees, no one to organise against famine. The UN is not a perfect instrument by a long shot but it is the only one we presently have. It was forged in war and designed to try and prevent it. It is where the world's powers can speak as equals. Better work with what we have than throw out the baby with the bathwater simply because you don't like some of the decisions that one part of the organisation has made. If you don't like what is happening, complain to the Government and have them actively arguing against what is being done, on your behalf.

hey brian whos side do you think the UN will be on if push comes to shove over the China Sea..

they talk about security.... WHOS do they say?..

Brian there is far too much starvation inequality female abuse going on all over this planet and the UN has done not a thing...

it neither stops nor chastises those responsible......a toothless tiger and very very wealthy one at that have you seen the UN BUILDING IN N.Y.

and thats just the tip of the iceberg.

Essentially the individual members' and hence the World's, Cods.

The UN is a collective security agency.

I am unsure why people are so worried about China's island grab in the South China Sea. China is very vulnerable to economic sanctions. All that is needed is for the West to redirect it's investments away from China to say, India. China relies on important raw materials and exported manufactured goods. If they have no source and no market, guess what happens to the Chinese economy?

Again, as I keep pointing out, the UN has basically no power. It is a clearing house for the member states. If the member states don't want to talk about something, that something doesn't come up for discussion. It is much easier to rant about Iran than address poverty in say, Columbia or Brazil. It is easier to rant about Israel than address female inequality in say, India.

The UN does not actually own the building in New York, Cods. It is held in a trust, granted by the US Government from a donation by John D. Rockefeller.

you nit pick about trivia brian......its the COST the ANNUAL COST of the UN that is outrageous.for what they do... they do NOTHING thats of note....not a bloody thing....dont you get that you go into all the historyonics ...that was THEN this is NOW.. things have changed a hell of a lot they are past their use by date if they ever had a date....useless....to b e honest if we were even in conflict I doubt anyone of us would say its OK ever fear the UN will save us.,..

it wont happen..

as for the building in NY its not the only one you know and the cost of running that building would b e hugmendous...electricity alone... so much for the planet... gotta keep the UN building warm and cosy..

you live in the past a bit brian.. always quoting history for what its worth.....this fat cow has just got fatter as far as I am concerned......and we dont need it..... you may but I dont
