I have the inside goss. China fucked this opportunity, and at the same time managed to be quite rude to Obama, and basically told the World that it is now a major player. Maverick cowboys from South America did not help.

China makes nice face saving noises but while their economy is so heavily reliant on carbon intensive industry she will never sign on to a legal, binding agreement nor internationally verifiable carbon cuts.

This should have been learned at Kyoto where she signed once nothing real was required of her.

Indeed, if Copenhagen teaches us one thing it is we can not get the entire world to agree on any solution to this problem, the developing countries, in paticular African countries, too had a very different agenda to the major carbon emitters.

And then you had the nuttier countries like Venezuela, who stalk Uncle Sam like a love sick psychopath, once again see the problem as entirely US caused and so simply US bash.

I think a much better approach would be to get the major carbon emitters, the real cause of the problem, India, China, the US, Japan, the EU and maybe even Brazil to come together to find their own solution, the rest of the world can do what it will or will not. These players constitute most of the carbon emitted.

Now we know China will not sign onto a trade scheme or set real manditory target cuts, but she is very interested in developing non-carbon intensive energy sources and carbon solutions such as reforestation.

Any agreement between these countries should set goals for emissions cuts (non-binding) and work on sharing non carbon energy research and development, plus contribute to a fund that works on reforrestation and will help the rest of the world develop in a less carbon intensive fashion.

The only real solution is not a political trading scheme but rather technological intensification of alternative energy.

God forbid we have "transparency".

Mind you the entire EU was pissed off at the Chinese as well, it was clear the entire Chinese strategy was to save face and then at the very end sink any chance of any agreement that really means anything.
