The Monarch - the Queen at the moment - has no political power in Australia. She has influence though, via the Governor-General. The Queen "elects" no one. The Governor-General is nominated by the Prime Minister who leads the Government of the Day. The Government comes from the political party that holds the largest number of seats in the House of Representatives. The MPs from the House of Representatives are elected by the citizens of Australia. The MPs in turn select who is to lead them and that person forms the Government. The Government is sworn in by the Governor-General.

"Draconian"? They resemble the same sort of gun regulations introduced in Switzerland at the same time: You are required to be a member of a firearms association/shooting club, you cannot own a firearm for self-defence purposes, you are not allowed to own Category C firearms (semi-automatic longarms, pump action shotguns). You can own bolt action, pump-action, lever-action long arms. We have not had a large firearms massacre since 1996, over 20 years ago. Today, more Australians own firearms (of the approved type) than they did before Port Arthur. Hardly "draconian".

That's pretty depressing. I know how thugs think. They're like stray dogs. Stronger in the numbers, preying on the weaker.

I had 2 gun stand-offs for my entire life span but I can proudly say — a show of peaceful force, or I should say the Big Stick Theory actually works, I won without a bloodshed.
