I guess rationale doesn't come into it if you are depressed and feel that hopeless. He would have known they would find him. Dreadful thing and so sad.

Perhaps if he had had someone to talk to at the right time this would not have happened.

Lots of men are like that. Listening is a rare skill among men, but listening to other men does help them. It can be hard to listen well.
Often if a man is listened to well by another man they will tell you their feelings.
You will certainly make a new friend or deepen an existing friendship.

I find it hard to understand how 2 people can live together for years and not see warning signs if one is a bit 'off'.
