Re: Motorhome musings
The gentleman up the street from me bought a magnificent motor home, complete with a towable rav 4.
We are talking true home here, he can't fit it in his driveway.
When he showed me around, I was gobsmacked
The bed was on some sort of rail system that retracted up to the ceiling to give more space, the kitchen popped out the side, hell it even had it's own bathroom and laundry .
But when he told me what it cost, my eyes watered.
You could travel Australia for years living in motels all the way for less.
So far he has done one around Australia
And several month long jaunts here and there, good luck to him.
I told him to leave it to me in his will.
But in honesty, I couldn't part with that much cash.
I think I'll stick to my camper until I fully retire, then we will buy our caravan.
Horses for courses
But about feeling unsafe
Most caravan parks these days are safer than where most people live
I wouldn't worry about yobbos
If there are any, go elsewhere, but tell the park about them
Next time through, I guarantee they won't be there when you get there next time.
But don't sleep on the side of the road or at truckstops
Too noisy and dangerous
Grey nomads forever!

Re: Motorhome musings
I have seen ones like that, am guessing around the $200K cost ?
Makes trips to Europe look cheap.
I agree, it is not that 'economic'.
Purchase cost, insurance, depreciation, fuel usage would be 18 L/100 kms or worse.
Then if you want to stay at a caravan park, $25 per night.

Yes, we all knowbrian ross wrote: ↑Fri Oct 12, 2018 2:50 pmFour wheel drives with automatic gearboxes? Oh, dearie, dearie, me. Tut, tut.
You drive a manual big tough 4x4 with lots of shovels, racks, bars and all that tough man pretend soldier stuff.
But sensible people, especially those driving in traffic every day, use automatics.
Do you still use rocks to cut up your food too?
Perhaps you live in a cave without running water and toilets?
Strange man is this bwyannnnnnnn
Very strange.

We stayed in a 4 star park last year in Wagga for $12.00 a night (off season)
Beautiful showers and toilets
Great cooking facilities
Didn't bother to get out the cooker.
Some places have special deals too.
Some garages on the road have overnight camping facilities for silly prices, $5.00, $10.00 where you can shower and use power.
It's all there if you look for it.
But there are also the expensive ones
$600.00 for a week with a less than great ensuite bathroom.
Pick your poison.

Oh, dearie, dearie, me. I don't drive 4x4s in daily traffic. I use a bike. Automatic gearboxes don't work very well in the wet/mud/slush/sand, now do they? Such a silly sausage you are, Valkie. 4x4s are for the bush, not the city streets. It's cause of you we have Global Warming.Valkie wrote: ↑Fri Oct 12, 2018 4:41 pmYes, we all knowbrian ross wrote: ↑Fri Oct 12, 2018 2:50 pmFour wheel drives with automatic gearboxes? Oh, and I use a knife to cut my food up. Funny that, using a basic utensil, right? As for caves, such old hat, right?
Oh, and I stopped being a soldier over 30 years ago, Valkie. I wonder what you've ever done for your nation and society? Mmmm?

Poor, poor, Valkie. Just think, you had me defending you against any aggressors. What a shame, hey?

https://www.beforward.jp/toyota/coaster ... _from=1991
Here is an idea, import a coaster from Japan that has the right motor.
Get a company here to convert it.
This one has a good 'bus' motor, low kms. Only a manual.
3320 kgs, I think a car driver can drive up to a 5000 kg vehicle
2nd hand converted coasters are uneconomic.
Well over $40K for an old coaster with over 300K kms on it
