Motorhome musings
have been dreaming of a small motorhome for a while.
Seems a good model is a converted Toyota coaster.
Which would suit us very well, only thing is .................
It has an old design 6 cyl diesel that was in the landcruisers or the newer ones are a newer designed 4 cyl diesel AND use a 4 speed auto !!!!!!!!
A 4 speed auto. Useless.
the 6 cyl diesel would be a 25 year old design

The little woman and I did the same thing.
But the newer ones are very expensive
We decided on a caravan,, more problematic in some ways, but better in others.
At least with a caravan, you can unhitch and drive the car around a lot easier than a motor home.
One good thing about motorbikes though
They tend to hold their value.

I have a dream
A world free from the plague of Islam
A world that has never known the horrors of the cult of death.
My hope is that in time, Islam will be nothing but a bad dream

Re: Motorhome musings
Thanks Valkie, I did research caravans and 4WDS.
I am a bit of a worry wart about safety. All the weights, handling and 'balancing' of a caravan and 4WD makes me a bit wary.
I discussed this with my wife, she is not too keen on having to leave the caravan to get to a 4WD in the middle of a night.
The cost of a 4WD then the cost of a caravan was significant. Say $30K each.
many people use them quite ok.

Re: Motorhome musings
Concern is yobbos coming around at night.
How to drive off ?
yes, $60K gets a good coaster. Shower, toilet, nice inside.
Don't know if I can stomach spending $50K and getting a 25 year old design 6 cyl diesel, 4 speed auto .........
How about the 8 cyl petrol in the current landcruiser, 6 speed auto ......
What if we want to drive up to Mt Baw Baw, or Bunya Mountains, Eungella national park ?
I want a 6 speed auto.

I wouldn't travel around some parts NZ in a camper van without a firearm in the vehicle

I read an article online a while back about Grey Nomads and Caravans. They had brought caravans made post-ww2, fixed them up and took off touring. Fine for a couple but obviously not for a family holiday. Sounded like fun. A friend and his wife drove around Australia several years ago with just one of those pop-up van things and they kept in touch all the way because of WiFi. They were away for about 4 months.

We like our road trips and being out in nature. You know, as long as we have a shower, hot meals, soft beds, WC onsite ............

Ahah - this crowd modify new 4WDs.
So, a new toyota hilux ute.
It'ld be squeezy ............
https://www.explorermotorhomes.com.au/
but the converted coasters do not represent good value for money.
too old, too many kms, too expensive.
