ABC director sacked

Post by sprintcyclist » Mon Sep 24, 2018 10:44 am

ABC Managing Director Michelle Guthrie has left the role just two-and-a-half years into her five-year term, the corporation's chairman has said in a shock announcement.

The ABC said the directors resolved it was not in the best interests of the ABC for Ms Guthrie to continue to lead the organisation.

Chairman Justin Milne said the decision was made in the "long-term interests of our own people and the millions of Australians who engage with ABC content every week".

"This decision has been driven by our commitment to deliver the best possible outcomes for our loyal audiences and the best possible experience for our own people," he said.

"We understand that transitions can be disruptive in the short term, however the ABC is fortunate to have an experienced and capable executive team that will provide continuity in the months ahead."

He thanked Ms Guthrie for her hard work since taking the position in May 2016.

"The board wishes to thank Michelle for her contribution to the ABC," Mr Milne said.

"We are very grateful for all her hard work."

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield thanked Ms Guthrie, and said the Government acknowledged her service in a "challenging and rapidly changing media environment".

A former Singapore-based executive with Google, Ms Guthrie was the ABC's first female Managing Director.

She began her career as a media lawyer and has worked with a range of media companies in Australia and abroad, including Foxtel, BSkyB, and the Asian-based Star television network.
David Anderson, the ABC's Director of Entertainment and Specialist, will serve as Acting Managing Director until a formal search process finds Ms Guthrie's successor.

Mr Anderson has a 30-year career in the media industry and has been responsible for leading the ABC's broadcast television networks and associated services, radio music networks, podcasts and specialist radio content.

He said it was an honour to lead the corporation.

"I recognise the challenges involved in transitions of this kind, but I am honoured to accept the board's invitation and look forward to working with our outstanding people to execute our strategy," he said.

The ABC board has commenced a formal search, both internally and externally, for Ms Guthrie's replacement.

ABC managing directors are selected by the board, independently of the government and opposition.

Mrs Guthrie is no more at the ABC.

What is of REAL interest is who will replace her ? Will he/she be NORMAL or a MARXIST SOCIALIST LEFTY ?

The rot started when Tony Abbott froze the ABC funding and Mrs Guthrie did not complain bitterly and from then on the ABC staff HATED her.  And the Gillard Lefty Plants LOATHED her.

Michelle Guthrie: The inside story behind her sacking
By Jennifer Duke, Broede Carmody & Michael Koziol 24 September 2018 — 6:52pm

When Michelle Guthrie bumped into Malcolm Turnbull before last year’s AFL grand final in Melbourne, a friendly chat about football wasn't on the agenda.

A former Google and Foxtel executive, Guthrie had been managing director of the ABC for just over 12 months and was in midst of restructuring the public broadcaster’s digital strategy. At an official AFL lunch ahead of the premiership decider between Richmond and Adelaide, the then prime minister started the encounter by complimenting Guthrie on some of the changes she had started to make.

But the conversation soon took a turn for the worse. Turnbull, who was communications minister before ousting Tony Abbott to become prime minister, complained about the 7.30’s chief political correspondent Andrew Probyn. A source familiar with the conversation said Turnbull accused Probyn of "anti-government" bias.

Like many media executives who find themselves facing a high-level government complaint, Guthrie did her best to give a non-committal reply. But Turnbull is believed to have been particularly angry when, three months later in December 2017, Probyn was promoted to political editor for ABC News.

Running the ABC is one of the most challenging jobs in Australian media, as this pre-match interaction demonstrates. The managing director must juggle a range of deeply interested parties ranging from the government, the board, viewers, employees and the Murdoch press. At any point in time a person in Guthrie’s position could expect the majority of these stakeholders to be hostile.

This challenge proved too much for Michelle Lee Guthrie. Months out from a federal election and halfway through her five-year tenure, the 52-year-old was sacked by ABC chairman Justin Milne, who said in an interview on ABC’s news channel on Monday that he didn’t want to go into the "ins and outs" of the decision yet questioned her “leadership style” and criticised her political relationships in Canberra.

Nor will Guthrie be missed by many ABC staff. Veteran radio broadcaster Phillip Adams brutally dismissed her as a charmless and absent manager who had trashed staff morale and infected the ABC with "managerial nonsense".

They need to clean out the board then the organisation. Otherwise it will remain the same politically biased mob.
McKew, Bailey, Cassidy, Trioli, Jones, Baird, Fanning, Adams, Faine, Rowlands, O'Brien, the list goes on and on....

There was an ex-board member on the Drum the other day showing off his political bias...Matt Peacock I think... ex ABC journalist... no wonder the news service is so biased. Perhaps they should not put staff on the board if they cannot be unbiased.

'The Drum' is one of the most biased programmes I have seen.

I don't watch the ABC, and I certainly don't watch their so-called Current Affairs programs and never have ... or the ABC News. I have Foxtel.

The ABC have been crapping on all day about Milne asking for Alberici to be sacked. They omitted to mention that it was over a story she headed that was anti-government (as usual) and totally erroneous.
Now the dear souls at the ABC have been demanding Milne be sacked from the board.

Must piss off all the extreme-Right wingers to realise that most Australians believe that the ABC still Australia’s most trusted news source!

Despite the best efforts of both major parties when in government to dismantle and destroy the ABC, it still soldiers on, with most Australians trusting it as a major news source in our society. Who do people turn to first, when something happens? The ABC! Which news service wins the most walkley awards annually? The ABC!

Milne should be sacked and even put in jail.
He had betrayed every Australian.
