The truth of the Uluru statement

The Uluru statement was a constitutional convention bringing together over 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders at the foot of Uluru in Central Australia on the lands of the Aṉangu people.

The majority resolved, in the ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’, to call for the establishment of a ‘First Nations Voice’ in the Australian Constitution and a ‘Makarrata Commission’ to supervise a process of ‘agreement-making’ and ‘truth-telling’ between governments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Needless to say this was not met well.

Australia is one of the few (if not only) former British colonies that doesn't recognise the indigenous people in its constitution.

People have argued against their inclusion in the constitution.

But the truth is this. Everybody in Australia has nothing to fear.

If we held a successful referendum and Aboriginal woke up the next morning with constitutional recognition, the world would go on.

But in Australia we would wake up, not losing 230 odd years of colonial rule but gaining 65 thousand years of history.

That makes us one of the oldest occupied countries in the world. Something we should be proud of.

I for one have lost a lot of respect for aboriginals...

but you have to earn RESPECT..

they have shown me none and so i reciprocate...

everything that has been done for them over the past 50 60 years they have stuck their finger up and said it will never be enough..

as you say! changing the constitution will bear no effect on them whatever..
