When in Rome, do as the Roman's do?
Cod's mentioned that she firmly believes "When in Rome, do as the Roman's do".
Do you agree with this statement, and why?

When in Rome do as the Romans do?
If that means assimilating, speaking the language, mixing with the locals and generally fitting in to the culture you have chosen to adopt?
Yes!!

I have done a bit of travel around the world
Some for work and some with the missus.
Generally, it's a much more enjoyable experience when one joins in and tries some of the local cuisine and activities.
It may be a little confrounting at times
But on the whole, it's a great learning curve.
An example;
My first Sauna in Finland was a bit of a shock.
All blokes
Stark nekkid
Sitting in a shed designed to get too damn hot to survive in.
When it finally gets too much, everyone bolts out of the shed and into a hole cut out of the ice and into bloody freezing water.
Surprisingly it didn't feel that cold at first, then your body wakes up and you start freezing
This takes about 4 seconds.
Then you bolt back into the sauna and repeat
This is done 6 to 7 times ( with bouts of drinking) until one feels pretty damn good.
It was absolutely amazing
I slept like a baby and felt better than I have in years.
Try it, you will like it.

I have a dream
A world free from the plague of Islam
A world that has never known the horrors of the cult of death.
My hope is that in time, Islam will be nothing but a bad dream

Nope! Different rules apply to those who set out on a quest to conquer what appears to be uninhabited land. If said lands actually are inhabited then a fight will ensue and the strongest will win. Maybe that is what is happening here now but we are too stupid to fight.Mistress Nicole wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 6:05 pmBut that didn’t apply in 1788?Black Orchid wrote: ↑Sun Aug 05, 2018 4:39 pmWhen in Rome do as the Romans do?

whenever we've travelled over seas we learn basic language to be polite and respectful... and the people appreciate that you took them time to try and learn some of their culture and to communicate with them with their lingo..
we drink "their" coffee
we eat "their" food
I drink "their" beers...
experiencing the culture is the best part of travelling to another country...

Cook (and those before him) knew the land was inhabited. They had spotted aboriginal people. Cook even took an artefact:Black Orchid wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 6:27 pmNope! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botany_BayArchaeological evidence from the shores of Botany Bay has yielded evidence of an Aboriginal settlement dating back 5,000 years. The Aboriginal people of Sydney were known as the Eora with sub-groups derived from the languages they spoke. The people living between the Cooks River and [3] while on the northern shore it was the Kameygal clan.[4] An artefact collected on Cook's first voyage in Botany Bay is the bark shield left behind by a member of a local Aboriginal tribe.
They knew full well it was inhabited. "What appears to be uninhabited land" wasn't and they knew it. When in Rome...would you have us all throwing boomerangs and playing the didge, to follow that maxim?

There is certainly an argument for "when in Rome"Mistress Nicole wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 6:05 pmBut that didn’t apply in 1788?Black Orchid wrote: ↑Sun Aug 05, 2018 4:39 pmWhen in Rome do as the Romans do?

Over Two hundred years ago a bunch of boat people came to these shores and they had absolutely no intention of "doing as the Romans." In 60 short years they nearly eradicated the culture of the people who were here first.
Perhaps what is good for the goose is indeed good for the gander.
