The victim didn't forgive him - she just didn't want the whole sordid business brought up at this late stage and disrupt her life all over again. That's why she wants the charges dropped. A person doesn't "forgive" someone for anally raping him or her when they're only 13 years old.

Christopher Hitchens talks of how he worked for a London magazine that detailed what Polanski had done and Polanski sued that magazine in a British court for libel, did not appear at the case for fear of extradition, and won a huge payout on technical grounds!

So not only did the guy flee justice but he used his money and power to even stop people discussing the case.
