A man in a wheelchair has been shot in the foot in what is believed to be a targeted attack in Sydney's west with police now hunting his attacker.

Emergency services found the 34-year-old victim in a wheelchair at a Phillip Street property in Auburn about 9.40am on Thursday.

He was treated at the scene and then taken to hospital while police closed the street.

The home has a disabled access ramp and a wheelchair can be seen near the back door in aerial video aired by the Seven Network.

A specialist police unit wearing body armour and carrying a battering ram was on the scene with officers conducting a line-search of the street.

Investigators are searching for a white four-door Lexus sedan with tinted windows and black-and-white number plates.

Forensic officers are scouring the scene of a deadly shooting in Sydney's west, with police now searching for the gunman who remains on the run.

A man, 46, has died after he was shot in the back at a unit block on the corner of George and Lachlan streets in Warwick Farm about 5.20pm yesterday.

The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene before being rushed under police escort to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition, but later died.

A crime scene was established overnight and police have spoken to several witnesses, who told officers that two unknown men, one armed with a gun, knocked on the victim's front door.

When they gained access to the unit, they went inside and shot the man in the back before fleeing on foot.

It's not clear whether they later escaped into a getaway vehicle.

I lived in Marrickville when I was younger

I lived in what could be termed a slum.

There were many nationalities there, and while we didn't all get along all the time, many grew up to be great mates.

But I see a different kind of immigrant now.
Not willing to mix and assimilate
Not grateful for the chance to be an Australian
They do not like us and hate our ways

Bring back the old immigrant
The ones that worked and excelled
The ones that became Australian and became a contributing cog in the great Australian wheel.

A police manhunt for two people is underway after a man was found shot dead in a Sydney street this afternoon.

NSW Police were called to the intersection of Hereford and Minogue crescents in Forest Lodge around 12:40.

Authorities discovered the man, thought to be in his 20s, deceased in the street.

The Herald Sun reports the man was shot in the head in a suspected execution-style killing.

It is understood authorities have recovered a weapon at the scene.

Police are currently searching for a man and a woman who they believe fled the scene after the shooting.

No description of the two suspects has been released.
