It was the pain he sufferd that made him do it.

Must admit I hadnt heard of him either but one of my sons is a chef by trade and really admired him!
as against Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver both of whom he didnt like much at all, despite meeting Oliver in the UK some years ago!

Anyway regarding Anthony Bourdain my son even complained today that he has lost his book that he really liked, he had loanedit to someone and was never returned. (Sounds a familiar story to us book lovers!)
"Kitchen Confidential" it is called
I have bought him a copy on Ebay tonight!

Unless you have known someone who suffers from severe depression it's hard to imagine how, and why, they feel things are so hopeless that they can't go on, even then it is almost impossible to grasp but something makes them slide into a dark and hopeless place and telling them to "suck it up" and "get on with things" is not the right approach.
It's a sensitive condition which requires a very sensitive approach. Whether we understand it, or not, it's very real to them and it can happen to anyone.

What I like about AB (or his shows as I don't know the man) is I like the way he travels.
When he's visited destinations that I'm familiar with, from my point of view anyway he totally nails the vibe of the place. He travels like I do, eats at the little out of the way places with the plastic chairs and connects with the locals. I know that's a lot to do with having good local fixers, but he nails it every bloody episode so that's a credit to him and his producers. I can watch an episode and say, snap, been there and if it's a destination that I haevn't been, I know I'd end up in similar places.
Another bloke who I really like and have had the opportunity to meet is rick stein. A lovely down to earth and unassuming bloke.

I have seen him a couple of times on the Food Channel (33) but am not really too familiar with him.
