All Australia has to do is stop immigration, wealthy coutnries tend not even to hold even, some don't even replace their population through native birth rates (Italy).

I suspect Australia can handle more people though different living patterns (urban living) technological innovation (water efficienies for example) but it will change the Australian way of life (the suburban ideal) forever.

It is the undeveloped world where population growth is out of control (nothing to do but fuck) and the only proven way to slow it in history has been economic growth, wealth, materialism.

When people want a lot of nice stuff they will not have ten kids and loose all that nice stuff.

Growth and materialism to stop population growth, and then needing population growth to keep growth and materialism "working"... hmmm. Seems like circular logic to me.

I have never bought the argument that you need serious population growth to sustain economic growth, what you do need is productivity growth.

What we do know is the population problems are in poor countries, countries with good economic growth rates see declines in native population growth.
