Re: schools and respectos
MORE than a quarter of students at Geraldton’s John Willcock College were booted out of school for at least one day last year, the worst suspension rate in WA.
Of the 906 children enrolled at the middle school, which caters only for Years 7-9, 245 were suspended in 2017 — a rate of 27 per cent.
Other regional high schools, Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School (23.7 per cent of students suspended) and Carnarvon Community College (22.8 per cent), came in second and third.
Armadale Senior High School (21.3 per cent) had Perth’s worst suspension rate, while more than a fifth of students at nearby Cecil Andrews College (20.4 per cent) were also barred from attending.
It was a record year for suspensions overall with 14,075 students removed from classrooms for an average 2.2 days.
Of 35,147 total suspensions, 9339 were for physical aggression towards other students and 2242 for aggression towards staff.
These statistics have strengthened the resolve of State School Teachers’ Union president Pat Byrne as she prepares to meet Education Minister Sue Ellery to discuss the Education Department’s review of school violence.
Ms Byrne will demand the department consider pulling persistently violent students out of mainstream schools and placing them into alternative streams, pointing to the Midland Learning Academy as a model that could be replicated far wider.
Established in 2016, the Academy is a highly specialised setting that caters to seriously disengaged students, but has a maximum capacity of just 20.
“When talking about instances of extreme violence we are talking about a very small number of students, so I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect alternative placements, and I think many parents would have the same view in light of the disruption that these students cause for others in the classroom,” Ms Byrne said.
The union also wants clarified what the department regards as “reasonable force” for restraining violent students.
“The department’s response to individual matters has become very difficult to predict and what is deemed reasonable force in one set of circumstances is not in another, leading to teachers finding themselves the subject of investigations into their conduct,” Ms Byrne said.
She said the uncertainty made teachers hesitant to break up violent altercations, placing students at risk.
“If teachers don’t intervene in instances where a student is getting attacked by another student, when does that become negligence?” she said.
The school teachers’ union is expected to ratify a new enterprise bargaining agreement this month after the McGowan Government agreed to upgrade Keeping Our Workplace Safe, a document designed to help principals prevent and respond to incidents of violence against staff, from a guideline resource to a formal policy.
Ms Ellery did not respond to questions about alternative placements for violent students, or the need to clarify what constitutes reasonable force when restraining students.
“There is no single fix for incidents of violence in our schools,” she said.

y comments werent about the WORST OFFENDERS...but about WA classing all offenders under the one umbrella... some kids lose it just for a moment and get into a fight.......others make a career out of fighting......
if you are going to send the most serious offenders to special school.......I would make it a Military School...then so be it..
as was stated in the link.. a VERY SMALL NUMBER GET SENT TO SPECIAL SCHOOL....
yet looking at those figures.... its a giant problem..... suspensions and sending kids away are too different things..

It is a giant problem. One disruptive student in a class stops the education of the whole class
perhaps the level of offending would decrease overall if the worst 25% of offenders were removed from normal schooling.
