Kirralee Paepaerei murder

Post by Black Orchid » Fri May 25, 2018 8:35 pm

Ice addict Joshua Homann, who stabbed his pregnant partner 49 times at their home in Sydney's west in 2015, has been sentenced to at least 22 years and six months in jail.

The 40-year-old sat doubled over in the dock as the sentence was read out and there were gasps from a packed public gallery.

Mother-of-three Kirralee Paepaerei died from stab wounds to her neck and chest and blunt-force trauma from a metal rod.

The 37-year-old's unborn child also died during the frenzied attack.

Homann conceded he was responsible for his partner's death but said he was not guilty of murder because he was suffering from a mental illness.

Justice Lucy McCallum told that court that while all murders are violent, this case "involved an extreme frenzy of violence".

She said Homann had an intent to kill and his psychosis did not diminish his culpability.

The court heard that Homann had experienced paranoia and delusions in the past.

22 years for murdering 2 people. He stabbed Kirralee 49 times and also killed the baby in the process. NOT enough!! What is wrong with our system?

I can't say that I have heard about this murder. Of course he was an "ice addict", so couldn't help it. Oh, and mental illness too! Hope they leave him a belt, shoe laces or something to "play" with. :mad What bullshit!

Drugs should not be a defence for murder.

Had not previously heard of this case....

So......he was sentenced to 30 years with a non parole period of 22.5 years. No discount for guilty plea, so I'll be interested to read what factors the Judge took into account in setting this non parole period.

As the matter is currently within the appeal period, there is no published transcript. When available I'll post it for others who share my interest.
