Private or Public Schools?

Of course it is the fault of the NSW Dept of Education. That's the whole point.

Many parents don't have the time, or the smarts, to teach their children at home. Isn't that what schools are supposed to be for?

The system needs fixing and making excuses for that or putting the hard yards on the parents doesn't cut it.

My son attends a public high school, he is in year 11 now, and he attended a public primary school.
He went to a small rural school where there were combined classes. In year six there were around five pupils combined with year four and five of around equal numbers.
So the teacher had about fifteen pupils in total, all of the children in his class seem to have done reasonably well. I think that is because of the teacher/student ratio, the teacher had time to spend on all of them. In this scenario if you were doing well in lower grades you were also given work from higher grades, my son was good at maths and science so was given sixth grade maths and science work in year 5.
The outcome of that has been he has always been in high achievers classes for maths and science throughout high school.
Primary school is where students learn how to learn, smaller class sizes in these years will benefit the students in later years.

The problem with the NSW Dept of Education is that the Curriculum has been destroyed by inclusion of PC LW crap by Unionists and radicals, instead of teaching educational basics.

Mellie, what does your daughter learn, generally at school?

Is it purely the Three Rs or is it also about how to be a functioning adult in our society?

To some, that may include "LW progressive crap" but in my experience it has included useful life skills like cooking, budgeting, how to use a library, how to talk to one another in a civilised, intelligent manner, etc. It has also meant they have learnt about the dark history of our culture and our nation, the wrongs done in the past to some of our citizens. All very useful things IMO.

Teachers arent social workers Brian. Budgeting, cooking and library skills should be taught at home, the state should not be wasting my hard earned teaching kids basic life skills

I believe teaching life skills is important and only serves to compliment the more traditional subjects she's being taught.

My preppy made dumplings in Chinese last week.

These diehard conservative traditionalists need to start appreciating positive change for the better.

I think our public system does a fantastic job most of the time


Btw, my daughter just adores her African decent friend in her class, his mother also a nurse is a lovely person also.

Exactly! Teachers are supposed to teach kids how to read and write, not that they can be a boy or a girl when they are 5.

I think it's up to parents to determine what school suits their children's needs best.

I also think theres too many expert parents out there trying to tell teachers and the system itself how they should be doing they're jobs better.

Parent's need to work with the system, not against it in order for their children to develop positive attitudes towards learning and school.

Alternatively, perhaps these whinging parents should teach their children themselves?

Positive attitudes towards Learning are forged very early in the piece, so whilst the system may not be perfect, I can guarantee its much better to work with the school than against it.
